    @blogdiva

I think that the US relationship to race and immigration is the unholy synthesis of chattel slavery (via the British-dominated triangle trade) and La Conquista peonage, which is the outgrowth of Euro colonial adventures in (North) Africa

And when Europeans say "we're not racist like Americans" they usually are focused on *one* of those two but are willfully blind to the other

French liberals overlook their history in Algiers; Belgians overlook Congo; Italians Ethiopia

I think the US traded class stratification for extra race stratification, too.

One can see, in literature and memoir to about mayyyybe 1830 in England, the possibility of an international race-blind aristocratic system instead of what we got. I think the UK and German middle-working classes were just strong enough to prevent it.

Surely this has a proper name to historians, perhaps as the something fallacy?

but as there were less and less moros and sefaradís to be had, ethnic minorities like basques, catalanes, gallegos would end up in those sweeps.

in SUGAR: A BITTERSWEET HISTORY, Elizabeth Abbot centers the development of the sugar industry on these waves of expulsiones from Spain.

the first mass scale sugar plantations were developed by Spain in Morocco with the enslaved expulsados who had no means to “go back to where they came from” in the Middle East 🧵…

@blogdiva let me to make some corrections if youn do not mind. The word is sefardí, in English Sephardic, not sefaradies. Gallegans, vascs and catalonias are not ethnic groups but people with different languages related to other kingdoms in the peninsula. Moriscos were people with Arab cultural background. It means they write or even talk Arab but not necessary muslims. In fact they had to convert critianism since 1492. Moro was a despective way for Islamic.

        YES!

        apropos of #Orientalism:

the whole pajamas craze of the early 20th century is directly related to europeans exposure to former slavery enclaves like Morocco when they pivoted to tourism to make money after a lot of their plantations went bankrupt trying to compete with South and East Asian plantations.

the lounge and beach pajamas craze really encapsulate that pivot away from MENA and the Indian peninsula into the “Far East”.

@blogdiva There is so much there that is applicable to our modern moment. It's going to take a couple of days to unpack it.

Always gets at the question that is at the rotten heart of capitalism with a capital 😄 how can we drag out--extract--the absolute most from our assets? Assets=people, land, and ideas.

@blogdiva catalonians were not prosecuted because they subdits of the crown of Aragon. I that time they were expanding by Sicilia and south of Italy. The Crown of Castilian try to expand in the north of Africa. They were success in Ceuta, Melilla and Ranger but Morocco was fully independent. Any way, the sugar cane industry is hard to believe was developed in Morroco in the Xv century. Maybe the following century In South america.

recently came across academic research on the last pogrom and expulsiones of Jews in Spain. it happened in 1898 in Galicia.

this is HIGHLY significant for a few reasons:

                1. 1898 is the year of the Spanish American War

                2. it is known the gringolarchy were doing everything in their power to destabilize #Spain and invade #Cuba and #PuertoRico

                3. #ManifestDestiny is tied to the hip of Sarmiento’s theory of #blanquemiento, which is #eugenics by #immigration

                but more importantly 🧵…

@blogdiva As far as I know there were no Jews in Spain after 1492. I have no clue about prosecutions of Jewish in Galicia in 1898. In that time, there were a massive immigration to south america in the same way as the Irish did (Fidel Castro's grandfather was gallegans). Related to Jewish prosecution in Galicia, refer me your sources, please. Therefore I can learn more about my own History.

if we look at Spain’s waves of expulsiones (aka deportations) and their use of eminent domain to take over the lands and properties of the deported, it’s clear they had expanded the definition of LIMPIA DE SANGRE and “one-drop rule” not for pedestrian racist reasons but because it was a quick way to make money.

so even though LA LIMPIA didn't have in #Spain the same white supremacist connotations that #blanqueamiento had in #Argentina and #OneDropRule in the United States 🧵…

@blogdiva hummm, not exactly. In the Middle Age, península were divided in diferent kingdoms with many diferent languages and cultures in the territory. Expulsions a represions againts local aristocracy were a way to standarized the population in order made easier to rule in unified crown of Castillia and Aragon by the end of XV century. This made the basis of the spanish national cristianism during the Franco dictatorship.

@AccordionBruce @blogdiva Housing and loans depend upon FICO scores. People won't go on strike or protest if it ruins their ability to obtain a place to live or own a car. FICO scores are the tool of financial oppression and control. However, if the housing prices and student loan totals get so out of hand that the the FICO system is destroyed and people can't rent or buy anything, then the proverbial shite will hit the fan, because then there is nothing to lose.

@blogdiva however the control of Ceuta allowed to reduce the actions of muslin pirates that robbed and enslaved coastal christian populations. Also the life of Medieval Sefardi Jews was totally different from the 19th century Eastern Europe cliché that present Ashkenazi cling to. Medieval Sephardi and latter 'Cristãos Novos' weren't slaves, they lend money to buy slaves or trade slaves themselves. Jews had influence in society, like the 'Chief Rabbi' represented in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Vincent_Panels

Therefore I can learn more about my own History.

when we're losing our entire planet, there really is nothing to lose. We've already lost. Anything we fight for now saves little tiny scraps for the future.

@blogdiva Galician here - lots of ugly things happened here, but pogroms in 1898? Not that I know of.

(Aren't you by chance mixing Galicia, Poland with Galicia, Spain?)

Spain is in Ceuta because it was part of Al-Andalus. after 1492 it became NOT a migration point but an EXPULSION point.

#Morocco has been complicit with #Spain since the days of the Hapsburgs. they helped La Corona in #deportations of spanish moros, sefaradís and even iberian ethnic groups like basque, gallegos, catalanes.

#Marruecos is to #España what El Salvador is today to #Trump and #MAGA #Project2025.

Spain’s first sugar plantations were worked by moro & sefaradí slaves in Morocco.

                                          🧵…
