@jtonline @neil the iPhone mini is still pretty popular in France. I see them all the time.

@zed @neil the closest I've found recently was the AEROS Centi but it's not real, and probably never will be. (I was desperate enough to sign up for emails but so far, nothing, not even one email.)

Then why don't you post this in your post, genius? But, of course, my post still stands correct. You still finance big corps because Graphene's VERY limited choice of supported hardware. You still can't easily replace parts. And you still have a phone built with blood minerals.

      Have a nice day!

Ah, that's an unusual interpretation of "new" to me. I bought a new, unopened, device. I will install my software of choice on it, and use it.

        To me, that's new phone!

And if google treated GOS equally to its own software, I might also hold that view. What I see from them is more of a tenuous tolerance.

Yeah. I have zero enthusiasm for the point when my current phone is too old to support something I have to have - because of the time lost to setting up the next, because I'm sure the next will fail to run something I also like, and because so few of them have headphone sockets any more.

Advancement like this is more like deterioration.

@neil I will soon have to update my pixel 6 (because of the security update running out).
I have already replaced the battery and the camera has a mark on the lens (not sure what)

5.5 years, maybe 6 makes me look like a sustainability here when compared to my friends and colleagues

I have the feeling though that the battery life is degrading way faster this time around. Not sure if it is due to enshitification of the OS with stuff I don't sure or something else

@jfparis @neil in the absence of programmed obsolescence, the typical lithium ion or lithium polymer batteries in mobile phones will degrade more slowly if the charge is usually kept between 40-60%. Always try to charge before they reach 0% and don't leave then plugged in at 100% for days. There's much more detailed information here. https://www.batteryuniversity.com/articles/

2001: I have a new phone. How exciting! Perhaps I can access the Internet on it via a Sharp Zaurus. This is so the future!

2002: Ooh! A new PalmOS device! Amazing! HotSync backup and off we go!

2004: Wow! This WindowsMobile device has a keyboard, as is basically a mini laptop. Cool!

                  ...

2026: I must get a new black slab because security updates have run out on my current black slab which, for all other intents and purposes, is absolutely fine. The new black slab does nothing new for me, and all I see is the chore of setting it up.

@neil tbf many black slabs must be replaced not for lack of security updates but simply due to the battery dying and not being user replaceable

@neil that's why there is a market for brands like #Fairphone. Although I'm afraid that most people need an excuse to get a new shiny black slab every two years.

@NaN @neil yeah it's part of the reason for staying with Fairphone. I'm too hesitant to move to a non stock OS for app compatibility reasons. I'm keen in the reparability aspect and have used it a few times now to replace some components that have worn out or the screen got scratched enough.

Interestingly newer screens seem lies likely to crack.

@neil @GrapheneOS I wish I could say I'd had that experience. I had two Pixels, and with both the battery lasted a year. Both had Graphene which I enjoyed. The next phone, a Fairphone 5 with Murena was also excellent, except the only part that isn't user serviceable (the main board) developed a fault. I bought it to try to escape the problems with battery life. Now I am miserably using an iPhone and swearing at it every other day!

                                      That's a shame 😞

                                      Did Google not replace it?

@neil As an autistic person I needed a quick replacement so I went out and bought another asap. I then recycled the phones with envirophone. Hopefully someone else had a better time with the phone when it was resold. I have a Nokia candybar around just in case my phone dies now. But sending a phone away for over a month (which was what I was quoted) just isn't a viable option for repairing such a vital device.

Oh, wow, yes! I'd be in exactly the same position.
