Why do all the toots on my timeline say they were posted "now" and yet reveal the true date/time when I hover over the "now"?

Why do all the toots on my timeline say they were posted "now" and yet reveal the true date/time when I hover over the "now"? After some scrolling, the "now" toots go back as far as 10 hours ago.

What are you using to view Mastodon?
The official mobile app can be pretty laggy, most people find Mastodon more reliable through the web interface or the third party mobile apps: https://fedi.tips/which-apps-can-i-use-should-i-use-the-official-app-or-a-third-party-app
Also, your server mastodon.social can be pretty laggy as it's got way too many people using it. You might find a more reliable experience if you move your account to another server, for example https://mas.to (instructions for moving are at https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server).

@FediTips Hello there! I'm using the Mastodon app. It appears as though the toot times have readjusted themselves back to normal. One thing I noticed since then though, is more spam, and in one instance an unblockable spam account that's following me. Not a big deal, just annoying.

That sounds like your server has been a bit overwhelmed, it can cause weird things to happen in the timeline like posts arriving out of order or weird timestamps.
The solution to this would be moving to a different server, mastodon.social is just way too large
About the spam, there is also a moderation problem on mastodon.social as they have too many users for their server moderators to cope with.

@FediTips I appreciate all your help. I agree that I need to find a new server. You provided a link a while back to a list of servers that I thought I bookmarked but can't seem to find. Would you be able to provide that again?

I run a site at https://fedi.garden to help people find nice well-run servers to join
If the choice feels a bit overwhelming and you just want a couple of good suggestions, then https://mas.to or https://ohai.social are good well-run general servers for example.
If you use the transfer guide (https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/) you can keep all your followers and follows when you move, and your old posts will remain intact and redirect people to your new account.
