So I removed the old cover and decided to replace it entirely. The tapering cylinder part on the old cover acts as the trap/u-bend for the drain, so it's important to have an airtight seal where it slots into the hole. The first thing I did was get a replacement trap insert that *doesn't* have the annoying top part. Now the plumbing is intact and I just had to deal with the awkward shape of top.

I wanted something that would collect hair neatly on the surface, in a place that's easy to scoop off, and would not require dismantling the plumbing in order to do regular daily maintenance(??????).

I went through a lot of design ideas before I found something viable. At first I thought I'd make something to go over the existing cover, but it would have to be a big dome and then hair would just collect around the edge anyway.

The shower originally had one of those ridiculous drains where there's a solid part in the middle, and the water goes in through the gap around the outside. And to clean it, you have to prise the entire thing off with a screwdriver to dig around in the stagnant puddle underneath (who came up with these? why are they like this?? they seem designed to be difficult to clean and have no benefits)

An unglamorous #3Dprinting / #CAD project I'm nonetheless very pleased with. I designed a new drain cover for my shower.
