A spark (A #kicksled, but literal translation is "kick"), the preferred vehicle for the few days when ice or hard snow covers everything. Like here, in Klaus Hanssens vei in the late 20s.

The kicksled's definitive records was in Sweden in the 1870s, and the "modern" one like this (iron legs, and flexible runners) was only as recent as 1909, so this was modern #micromobility transport!

These days, salting and sanding and plowing of cold roads makes these harder to use in winter – barely scraping by with one factory that still make them in Norway.

"Indeed," the Norwegian chuckles, talking to a tourist, "polar bears walk the streets everywhere in Norway!"

Well, in 1953, there _was_ a #PolarBear loose in #Bergen. Coming from the North, and supposed to be transferred to a ship going to a zoo Germany, mommy bear escaped and swam around the port for a while, before being recaptured and sent on – along with her two cubs. Quite the spectacle!

Big Bank Aesthetics in Vågsallmenningen, #Bergen.

The house was built for Bergen Kreditbank, which stayed here from 1859 to 1975. In more modern times the house has been called "Banco Rotto" (bankrupt), due to a restaurant and bar that ran here in the 80s by that name. Today it is a hotel.

Is it a horror movie? No, it's Christmas spirit in #Bergen!

Nothing reminds a bergenser about the Yule Miracle like cold, snowless streets with holiday decorations. Here in 1928 for a surprisingly dry(?) late-year shot.

Keen-eyed viewers will recognise the street as Vaskerelven (The Washing river), named so due to the creek that used to run here long before this picture was taken. Had it not been for the haze, you could probably almost have seen the city theatre, Den Nationale Scene in the distance.

Lille Lungegaardsvann (Small Lake Lungegaard) in 1930, a few years after it was artificially made into a lake by filling the "empty" landmass seen in the background, but before it was built to be the park we know today.

This is Konsertpaleet (The Concert Palace) sometime in the years after the war. "Notorious" by Alfred #Hitchcock is showing, and drawing a crowd.

Konsertpaleet is still a cinema, now combined with its adjacent Engen Kino, but was opened as far back as 1918, as a venue for concerts. The #Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra played most of their concerts here until the opening of the Grieg Hall in 1978.

1960s TikTok was a bit different. It was handcranked and analogue.

This is the inside of the clock in the #Bergen #Cathedral (fourth picture to see the outside). The church is old, in its original place since 1150, but has burned and been partially rebuilt several times, and the clock face has been there since 1716.

In 1665, it was – as the story goes – hit by a cannonball from Dutch privateers attacking the harbour! The cannonball can be seen in the front wall still (in the image, just to the left of the lower part of the rosary window), but this is set there with concrete at a later point to illustrate the story.

No, I don't know who the guy is, but judging by his skills, probably a timepiece influencer.

Strandgaten, 1909. The place to see and be seen.

Still an important shopping street, Strandgaten (Beach Street) in the #Bergen city centre has been called that since 1857, and has been a central spot for trade and goods since the 1200s.

In the background, you see "Muren" (The Wall), which wasn't actually a city wall, but a private house with a well under the archway. The umbrella and raingear business there now, is actually there in this image as well – Aksdal i Muren has been providing rain protection for locals since 1883.
