Think about it for a second. Food and water for three or four days, or even a week, *is expecting community to help*. It's just being realistic about how long it takes to mobilize that help.
The fact a lot of the people doing those things do not recognize this reality and think otherwise does not reduce the importance of them having enough supplies to survive the gap.
Now, prepping for a year? That's just putting off the inevitable, if community doesn't come through.
