  • "Rapid EV chargers will necessitate 1,900 acres of land by 2030"
    madsenandersc@social.vivaldi.netM madsenandersc@social.vivaldi.net

    @primonatura

    I think a bit of context is needed.

    1900 acres is about the same as 1200 football fields or 25 golf courses. Heck, we have farms in Denmark that are almost 10 times that size.

    Just to say, that for those who may not know much about acres, 1900 is really not much at all. 🙂

    Remind me again - why are these scumbag grifters even a part of the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia?

    Given that they're not donating anything to Ukraine, don't do anything to put even the slightest pressure on Putin and in general are profiting off of the war and thus have a vested interest in the war being prolonged as much as possible, why weren't the USA booted from the negotiation table a long time ago?

    Really? - OK, that's pretty different here. Let's say we lease with 15000 km per year and return the car after 3 years.

    Every single kilometer more than 45000 km will have to be paid by something like 1 DKK (depending on the terms of your lease) with no exceptions.

    I get the wish to keep the old car in working order, and that is definitely a thing - it only holds value if it will start and run properly, and a couple of longer runs every month will do exactly that.

    Ooooh - I'm gonna be so naughty here.... 😁

    Did you try calculating how much you could afford to spend extra on over-driven miles (not sure if that is a word, it's a direct translation from Danish), using the EV instead of adding drops of almost liquid gold to your old car? He asks casually, not wanting to confuse matters. At all. Hehehe....

    Small tip from another Kona owner: If you can time it so you do 20-65% instead (if that is enough to get home), you'll save 10 minutes - it's usually around 65% things start to go real slooow on the Kona 64 kWh. 🙂

    @Blacksmithoz

    "In August 2025, the New Zealand government announced plans to remove its fuel excise and instead apply its road user charge (RUC), based on distance travelled and vehicle weight, across all vehicle types by 2027. "

    If "all vehicle types" also means heavy types like trucks (or semis, depending on where you are from), this will either become insanely expensive for haulers or have a pretty minimal effect on cars for personal use, won't it?

    We have something similar in Denmark, but here it has been based - at least to some extent - on the emissions from the vehicle. That means that large and clean gets an advantage over small and dirty, at least to some extent.

    It'll be interesting to see how this will be implemented - based on our experience, it's almost impossible to make it fair for everybody, and I think that it's currently being used for a political goal (getting people to drive EVs) here in Denmark.

    I don't necessarily disagree with that goal (and am making a good saving right now by running an EV), but it is still a fact, nevertheless.

    I'd say yes, given that EVs are now more than 80% of new vehicles, and 95% of all cars sold to consumers. 🙂

    There are a number of fleet owners like Avis that still buy ICE vehicles for international customers, but other than that, there are very few customers that can't get by with an EV.

    I don't remember it ever being mandated by the government, and weirdly enough, I mostly remember seeing pricing signs where the chargers are at a gas station - that is, where there is already a huge pricing sign for fossil fuel.

    I have seen pricing displayed a few places where the chargers are organized in a large charging park, but in general I don't think they tend to display the price there.

    To be fair, most users of charging parks probably already use that particular charging providers app to check for availability anyway, so they will know the price prior to charging from there.

    I do expect pricing signs to become more prevalent as competition ramps up. We already have areas where a lot of chargers are empty most of the time, and although we add another 10000 EVs every month, going from 500K to 2800K EVs will still take time. Having mostly empty chargers for another year or two is probably not an option. 🙂

    - or even better, plug and pay.

    I know Tesla has had this forever, but we're only now seeing it being rolled out at scale here in Denmark, and for me it means the difference between using one particular charging park instead of the others right next to it.

    It's not supported by all cars, but I think most models from around 2018 and newer are OK.

    We do have pricing displayed pretty well at most fast chargers, but destination chargers are still the wild, wild west.

    Same goes for directions when entering a parking lot: Fast chargers are usually bright and colorful and relatively easy to spot, whereas finding destination chargers sometimes feels like looking for buried treasure - just with no X on the map...

    I have old friends and colleagues in Ukraine, and according to them, that election was already being influenced heavily by the Russians (probably even more than Russia is trying to influence the election in Hungary), so there is that.

    Other than that, I tend to agree with you. Foreign powers should keep their grubby little paws of local elections in other countries.

    @co2mmit @grist

    First: 65 "necessay" cookies? Seriously?

    Second: I really like the idea of virtual power plants made up of a network of V2G vehicles and chargers, but it should probably be in the form of grid stabilization only.

    It's true that allowing people to cook with surplus energy from their car is tempting, but unless you have some serious extra range in your vehicle, quite a lot of EV owners probably end their day with not that much juice left in the battery.

    That said, slowly siphoning 2 kWh over the span of half an hour to support the grid will hardly put any load on anything, and if you have 2000 vehicles each supplying just a single kW to the grid, you suddenly have the equivalent of a 2MW generator. Placed locally. Next to the consumer.

    Heh - I'll do you one better. 🙂

    Currently the Nordpool spotprice is negative, and even with taxes, the price at the plug is only DKK 0,11 in a couple of hours - that is 1,5 Eurocent per kWh.

    Even our own solar can't produce electricity at that price when calculating deprecation into it.

    God, my economy loves that we drive an EV.

    Sooo - everything else Trump has said and done is what Christianity is all about? Because I think that there may be a thing or two that I learned in bible studies before my confirmation back in the day that did not align completely with things that have come out of Trumps mouth. Just a few. You know, just details...

    And yeah - I'm kinda agnostic by now. There are simply too many people using religion to hurt other people, and I can't be a part of that. You do you, and if it makes you feel better, all the power to you. Really. Just don't use religion as an excuse to hurt others.
