Welcome!

Can you imagine, years ago how the internet was before? We know Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Youtube. We knew blogger, Tumblr, Skyrock… and long before, it was the forum era as phpBB..and mail-lists.

And now with ActivityPub, we are reshaping the web, and achieving much more with lots of freedom. So thank you all, and welcome 🤟😁

I concur with the other two respondents. I came upon this post after searching up “stop doom scrolling” because I have been doing far too much of that on Lemmy. I started scanning your article and have bookmarked it for a more focused read later but at first blush, I don’t think the Fediverse or RSS is a solution. Not in and of themselves. Same search, different post, lead me to a book: The Shallows - What the Internet is doing to our brains, by Nicholas Carr. Added to my reading list but first impression from the synopsis is that the medium shapes how we think and behave. Our brains are being shaped to jump from snippet to snippet. Concentrated linear thinking is eroded. My gathering impression is that avoiding doom scrolling is about being intentional in our interactions with content and I suspect that is your point in the linked article. RSS may be a way to support “intentionality” because once you have scanned your curated list of content, you are done. That only works if you have built the habit of not then skipping to the next “channel” to scan some more. Thanks for creating the article and posting it. You have helped me think on this more deeply.

This is really nice. I would like to see more bluesky integration into fediverse platforms, they should really be part of the same network.

@julian@activitypub.space are you involved with @portafed@mastodon.social as well? This was in the context of suggesting that because Inkwell was developed with what appears to be a centaur(1) approach, and you think the Portafed ReadMe reads a bit like Trained MOLE scat, the two might be linked. This is drawing a rather long bow ; ) I think you may be tilting at windmills about Portafed. The author confirmed, in response to your post, that they used a Trained MOLE to help with some surface documentation. This could also be an example of a centaur approach. Maybe English is not their first language? Perhaps they have a form of neurodivergence that makes them excellent at writing cryptographic hieroglyphics, but poor at writing natural language to explain their work to other humans? It pays to ask probing questions, for sure, but not to leap to conclusions. (1) I’m referencing @pluralistic@mamot.fr’s writing, on when automation is used to support a human (centaur), and when a human is reduced to a meat-based support system for the automation (reverse-centaur, or “human in the loop”). IMHO his best piece on this is Revenge of the Chickenized Reverse-Centaurs.

NOTHING will ever convince me to base my career-viability on wordpress, which is PHP based. https://whydoesitsuck.com/why-does-php-suck/ ( notice that TRUE == TRUE == FALSE in PHP, which I consider intolerable, in critical-infrastructure ) Sorry. PieFed’s Python based ( I wish it had been Julia-based: both less-ugly AND higher-performance, by engineering-of-the-language-to-the-CPU-architectures ), & doing it in a good high-level language means that dev-effort can go into getting the architecture right, instead of slogging-through the low-level details, which Rust-based platforms force. Until the architecture’s sorted, I think that Haskell would probably be the ultimate domain-cracking/prototyping language for developing such a platform. Wordpress, though? Zed Shaw ended up HATING it, & I tend to agree with people who value effectiveness in infrastructure, as he does. It solved the problem of getting everybody dependent on it, but it didn’t solve either the security problems, or the correct-code problem, or the properly enabling-people-who-want-structured-publishing-with-discussion-and-karma-systems-and-federation-and-different-kinds-of-communities problem. Same as Microslop’s beloved no-keyboard-warrior/ALL mouse-based paradigm: helped some, & hobbled others. Each paradigm whether platform or language helps some, & hobbles others. Wordpress needs to be obsoleted from our world, yesterday, forever, in my view. So does PHP. PHP thinks the boolean value true is equals to the string "foobar" while "foobar" is equal to 0, yet 0 is not equal to true.   ( : _ /\ _

In the sidebar of every page on every PieFed instance (unless the admin has chosen to turn it off) there is a “Rational Discourse Toolkit” which shows a random selection of links to counter groupthink, promote logical and rational discussion, puncture echo chambers and fight cult-like behaviour and conspiracy theories. It’s not perfect. It’s effectiveness is unknown. But it makes PieFed extremely unattractive to any group that relies on isolation, delusion, control and bullshit.

Terribly sorry for the confusion. I may have overstepped but not out of malice. Just frustration and a desire for expressing my frustration. I know. I know. Someone claiming to be rational while doing the exact opposite. Which is a human thing to do, I guess? I took some time to meditate on my actions that day and found out I was trying to make too many arguments at the same time. And you’re right. I was wrong to let my enthusiasm take the reins. Sorry about that.

Ohhh I get it now, cool! I don’t think I would’ve even expected such a thing to federate through, if I’d realized what it was. If that gets working eventually it’ll be awesome, but I’m already pretty impressed as it is. Nice!

I am working on this. I have a local post archive that syncs with bluesky accounts. I am using DIDs as the primary identifier, and hope to incorporate activitypub and rss soon under the same identifier. I have also created a social graph importer for walled garden sites, such as facebook/instagram, so folks have an escape hatch for all their legacy social media history, and a way to manage exported files in a nice file browser format. I will have something to share in the near future, but suffice it to say, I think storing your data locally is an idea very worth pursuing.

Just saw this. Awesome to see! Would’ve opted for this when creating the pixel art comm, as then reports would federate to my instance too (a very nice perk of Piefed), and I wouldn’t need to log into the local account to check every so often. Great option for any potential new relevant comms too

And i tested Meego, it was a pretty good OS, the phone was very beautiful. We only need time and a more bold approach to defend our economy.
