You can now set your quote posting privacy preferences on Mastodon.

@FediTips Thanks for investigating. Personally I would like to see the server admin in the non tech interface being able to choose the default
Agreed. It should either be the admin's decision on defaults or else opt-in by default for everyone (i.e. everyone set to "nobody can quote").
-
Yeah, it's not foolproof.
But it is useful for the friction it causes and also for the signal it sends when people check to see if quoting is possible. At the moment there is no way to know if someone is okay with quoting.
-
@FediTips If the default is "Everyone", I guess I must have changed it for myself to "Only your followers". The option is there in version 4.4.3.
As far as I know the default is currently "everyone" but it's possible that a techy admin might change this default by directly editing their server's software (as Mastodon is open source) or config files on their server.
-
What is the default?
As far as I know the default currently seems to be "Anyone can quote you".
This isn't great, it would make the feature opt-out rather than opt-in. We'll have to see what happens when the feature launches.
-
If you have a public post, it's always going to be possible for others to screenshot or copy-paste it, yes.
However, setting the quote privacy is still useful because it causes friction for those who defy it (their quote posts look crap) and also because it indicates your preferences to those who respect it. At the moment there is no way to tell if people want to be quoted or not.

You can now set your quote posting privacy preferences on Mastodon. You can allow anyone / just your followers / nobody to quote you:
1. Log into your server's website
2. Click️ Preferences (if you're on a phone it's ☰ in bottom right and
️ Preferences)
3. Click "Other" (if you're on a phone it's ☰ in top right and "Other")
4. On "Who Can Quote" menu select option you want
5. Click "Save Changes" buttonThe actual ability to quote post will be in the next Mastodon update.
p.s. Several people pointing out if you make a public post, people can still screenshot or copy-paste or link to it, no matter what you choose.
However, setting your quote preference is still useful for two reasons:
- It shows your preferences to those who respect them. People who see no quote option after quoting launches will know you don't want to be quoted.
- It adds friction for those who defy your wishes, their quote posts will look crap because they have tried to bypass your wishes.

p.p.s. Okay, more info on quote tooting from one of the Mastodon developers:
- It will ALSO be available on a per-toot basis. So, if you want to allow some toots to be quoted but not others, that will also be possible.
- You can change your setting after publication, and it can retract existing quote toots by other people.
- If someone quotes you it will appear in your notifications column, just like boosts and favourites already do.

@FediTips That's how I want it to work
Just had it confirmed by a developer, you will see it as a notification just like boosts and favourites: https://oisaur.com/@renchap/115068739790243414

I'm surprised if this doesn't get to be a per post setting. And also "people I follow" as option (and/or mutuals)
One of the developers just posted that it will also be available to set per post:

@FediTips we just need to wait for the app developers to catch up now...

The Masto devs haven't published the API documentation about quoting yet, so this could take a bit longer.
They have published docs about displaying quoted toots though, so that should be in apps sooner.

@FediTips do you know if quote tooting will respect federation?
Like right now, if i boost from this account on dotArt a toot from Server A, if Server B isn't federated with Server A (or has been defederated), Server B wont see my boost. Is quote tooting going to work the same way?

Servers don't federate in that way, it's more like this:
Person Y is followed by someone on Server B, so all of Person Y's public posts are visible to everyone on Server B.
Your public posts and boosts (and quote posts) are visible to everyone on all the servers of all your followers.
If a server defederates another server, it does so by cutting off all of its own members follows connected to that other server in both directions.

@FediTips thats not what i mean. i do know how servers federate, thanks anyway

@FediTips @aldercone this seems to be implying that if someone boosts a post, all of their followers will see it regardless of whether they can see posts from the original server the post was on... That sounds wrong? At least doesn't line up with my experiences, I've never seen a boost of a post from a server that doesn't federate with mine and I feel like if that was a thing I would have come across at least one lol
-

Ahh apologies, I misread your post
I'm guessing you're right, it sounds like it will handle it in a similar way to boosts, i.e. quoted posts won't show up on servers that their server has defederated.

Yup, apologies, my reply was a bit oversimplified (and I had misread the original question too).
You're right, boosts won't show up on servers that have been defederated by the server of the post being boosted.

@FediTips Not sure I like the "it can retract existing quote toots by other people" part.
Does this mean that if the author turns off quoting (for one post or all) because of a single offensive quote post, all quotes will be deleted?
Edit: Found more details on how it works: https://oisaur.com/@renchap/115068805739885059
Seems that posts won't be deleted but only the quoted parts blocked.

What is this whole "quote" thing about in the first place?
Thus far, I copied a piece of text from someone's toot, put "" around it, indicated who wrote it, and called the whole thing a quote. That doesn't seem to be what is meant here.
So, what else is?

It's where the original post you're quoting appears embedded within your own post. It means people can see the original post entirely without eating your character limit, and it looks a bit nicer (depending on the interface or app you're using).
You don't have to use it, but it's very popular on many platforms.
