I'm surprised if this doesn't get to be a per post setting. And also "people I follow" as option (and/or mutuals)

@FediTips Do we know if we'll be notified when someone quote posts us?

@FediTips Is this across all servers? I don't see this option in my settings. Thanks!

I haven't seen it in action yet but I assume it will appear in notifications the same way boosts currently do?

It should be there on your settings, your server is running the latest version of Mastodon.
Are you logging in on your server's website? These settings aren't on the apps yet.

@FediTips That's how I want it to work

@FediTips If the default is "Everyone", I guess I must have changed it for myself to "Only your followers". The option is there in version 4.4.3.

@FediTips Anyone can still copy/paste the link to your unprotected post and quote that way.

@FediTips And is there a default setting for existing accounts & maybe different for new accounts or each server admin can choose the defaults?
-

They can, but this adds friction and also makes clear to others if they don't want to be quoted.
At the moment there's nothing to indicate preferences one way or the other.

I just checked the admin panel on my own server and there doesn't seem to be any way for the admin to choose the default. (It may be possible if the admin is techy enough to edit their server's files directly, but it's not in the graphical interface at least.)
The default setting seems to be "Anyone can quote", which is perhaps not good as it means this is an opt-out feature rather than opt-in. We'll have to see what happens when the actual quoting feature is released.

Your instance disabled.social is running version 4.3.6 so it doesn't have this yet.
You might want to check with your instance admin @McCullohMD if you want to ask about updates.

@FediTips Thanks for investigating. Personally I would like to see the server admin in the non tech interface being able to choose the default

Agreed. It should either be the admin's decision on defaults or else opt-in by default for everyone (i.e. everyone set to "nobody can quote").
-
Yeah, it's not foolproof.
But it is useful for the friction it causes and also for the signal it sends when people check to see if quoting is possible. At the moment there is no way to know if someone is okay with quoting.

As far as I know the default is currently "everyone" but it's possible that a techy admin might change this default by directly editing their server's software (as Mastodon is open source) or config files on their server.
