@OohOkayKay around here, if food is required for any sort of social event, fresh pretzels with butter are the default choice.

In many villages, kids are given a giant pretzel on their first day of school.

I recently overheard one parent telling another, as he was shoving pieces of pretzel into his kid’s mouth: “I have no idea how they raise kids in places where there are no pretzels.”

They're not as popular as doughnuts in Canada but there's usually a few places that sell them. Generally bakeries.
