@jalefkowit it was launched at Davos. I doubt there are many good things coming out of Davos.

"Very powerful, well-connected people" are a big part of why we are living in a dystopian nightmare.
-
@jalefkowit wouldn't be too bothered, their main selling point is connecting "verified humans" so I expect that they will ask for some sort of I.D. - in my view this is just as good as them digging their own grave -
#Smart_ArsesI'm sure that's part of the reason why the E.U. is happy to waste money on it, apart from all the rich influential people on the advisor board. I'm sure "W Social" will happily comply with the "age verification" surveillance agenda promoted/mandated by the E.U., E.U. member countries and other autocratic states around the world, maybe it will even integrate the E.U. "age verification" app which they already paid 4 million for!
-
@jalefkowit no, yeah, sigh. it's a bit of a recurring problem
part of it is because they're playing two different games. power and popularity is a very different goal from helping people do things
thinking that way has helped us accept it, over the years..... but maybe the stakes are high enough that we should not accept it. hm.

@ireneista @jalefkowit Honestly, a critical mass of people accepting this sort of thing is why it can happen in cases where the stakes are so high in the first place?
Accepting shitty behaviour gives (social) permission to keep doing the shitty thing. -

@ireneista @miss_rodent @jalefkowit Yes, and also choosing one's battles. There's a tension there but there's wisdom in each?

@jalefkowit mastodon has been around for so long and also is different on an idealistic level so I don't think it can compete for the masses.
And I wouldn't say EU hasn't been trying, they have funded mastodon through nlnet and they are trying, @HennaVirkkunen is here.

@jalefkowit I think the issue is that moderation on mastodon is decentralized. That makes it effectively impossible to enforce strict rules from the top down.
People in power will not support a platform that doesn't give them absolute power. -

@xgranade @miss_rodent @jalefkowit these are important questions, but they're backwards-looking. to focus on the future: what should our strategy be?

This is reaching too far into conspiracy theory.
Sounds like W Social simply offers government more chance for, well, governance than something like Mastodon would.
No need to look for drama or personalities. Government wants to govern.
