    @davidgerard the blatant sophistry is making me twitch. Attributing violence to the non-violent party when there's a literal Nazi at the table is so far beyond appropriate.

      @davidgerard “What happened is akin to <a random act of violence>” no, accurately pointing out online that someone is a nazi isn’t an act of violence. the nazi is, definitionally, calling for acts of violence, though.

      if you can’t get this straight, you shouldn’t be in charge of a community

      @davidgerard also, you’ve gotta love the typical polite fascist trick:

      no, this isn’t akin at all to randomly punching someone in a restaurant and getting thrown out. this is akin to overhearing another restaurant patron spewing hate, calling them a nazi, them going “damn right I’m a nazi”, and then the owners of the restaurant throw you out instead of the nazi

      it’s real weird how the facade of neutrality breaks when you ignore the weird, incorrect implication that the accuser is guilty of any kind of violence

        @davidgerard “What happened is akin to someone walking into a restaurant and seemingly randomly punching another patron. They're going to get thrown out.” not even slightly, but ok. I think walking into a restaurant and punching someone spewing hatred who admits to being a nazi is a favor to the restaurant, actually

        @zzt @davidgerard not when it’s a Nazi restaurant.

          hm, i thought KDE was trying to make up for platforming the nazi. lots of people today saying "let's give KDE a chance!"

          nope, they're now doubling down further.

          this post is a study in the art of nazi apologetics in online discourse - removing the content of the issue and leaving only a description phrased to sound innocent.

          what happened is that the straight-up nazi was posting, someone identified that this person was a straight-up nazi, the nazi admitted they were that nazi, then KDE banned the person calling out the nazi and kept the nazi

          KDE *later* banned the nazi - after public outrage at KDE's behaviour - but the person who called the nazi out is still banned

          the social media person sympathising here with the nazi tries to claim that calling out the nazi is equivalent to real world violence.

          @davidgerard

          This is one step from saying, 'they're a Nazi, but they're a friend of mine and have been around for a long time, so who's the real Nazi, mmmmm?'

          Because I all but guarantee the mod involved here has had an established relationship -- professional or personal -- and doesn't want its extent to come to light.

              @davidgerard in any case, now that mods, sysadmins(?), and other participants *have* been made aware, the outcome is... the Nazi is still in the bar. Which shows exactly what would have happened had the suggested action (private notification) been taken.

                      @despicable_me @davidgerard I don't trust that narrative, since pointing out someone's prior public statements is in no way "doxing". If the author is willing to misrepresent the situation to that extent, they're not a reliable narrator.

                            @davidgerard

                            a solid aspect of social existence:

                            1. bully bullies someone. observers stand around watching

                            2. bullied person fights back. observers go "woah woah! stop!"

                            alternatively:

                            1. bully bullies someone. people complain. authorities do nothing
                            2. bullied person fights back. authorities act. and punish bully and bullied the same, sometimes the bullied worse

                            i don't know what it is about sociology, but you see this time and time again

                            from school principals to... social media mods

                                a solid aspect of social existence:

                                1. bully bullies someone. observers stand around watching

                                2. bullied person fights back. observers go "woah woah! stop!"

                                alternatively:

                                1. bully bullies someone. people complain. authorities do nothing
                                2. bullied person fights back. authorities act. and punish bully and bullied the same, sometimes the bullied worse

                                i don't know what it is about sociology, but you see this time and time again

                                  paradox of tolerance and why you cannot be nice with bullies. it doesn't help, especially if you know they are greedy AND stupid. they will always change the goal posts.

                                    hm, i thought KDE was trying to make up for platforming the nazi. lots of people today saying "let's give KDE a chance!"

                                    nope, they're now doubling down further.

                                    this post is a study in the art of nazi apologetics in online discourse - removing the content of the issue and leaving only a description phrased to sound innocent.

                                    what happened is that the straight-up nazi was posting, someone identified that this person was a straight-up nazi, the nazi admitted they were that nazi, then KDE banned the person calling out the nazi and kept the nazi

                                    KDE *later* banned the nazi - after public outrage at KDE's behaviour - but the person who called the nazi out is still banned

                                    the social media person sympathising here with the nazi tries to claim that calling out the nazi is equivalent to real world violence.

                                      The story of centuries...

                                      The "cause" is never punished...

                                      The "effect" is usually punished.

                                      The cause should go to jail (or similar, depending what the cause is...)

                                        it really is the case

                                        {someone gets victimized}

                                        statement to victim: "well why were you there? well why did you act like that? well you should have done {X}..." etc., etc.

                                        statement to offender: {crickets}

                                        it's something about humanity that is deeply wrong and powers a lot of malice in it
