so i want to sidestep the inevitable argument about what socialism means and simply note that the term is just a lightning rod in the USA for endless pointless bickering over word definitions

The only way to build a government that is 'for the people' is to start at the bottom & ask the people. Build from the bottom up not the top down. Figure out what to call it after it's done. I lean toward a Democracy however the people define it.
