A few months ago, a client asked me to shave about €200 a month off our agreement. "We’re trying to cut back on expenses", he said, "to boost our cash flow." I was hesitant, but hey, I agreed.

Fast forward to this morning: one of his team members calls me asking for help because - and I quote - "both Claude and ChatGPT are giving me answers that just don't feel right."

I asked for a little context, only to find out they had upgraded to the top-tier plans for both AIs so they could "solve problems on their own without bothering me."

So, I dropped my client a line: we either revert to our original agreement, or we wrap up this collaboration effective immediately.

Asking me for a discount just to throw far more money at AI subscriptions - only to call me anyway when the bots fail - is, to say the least, a slap (or slop?) in the face.

        @stefano it's a sad trend that companies believe a LLM is a consultant in a box 😞

@stefano I'm sorry about your shitty client.

Years ago I did consulting for a large financial client (who were in a legal bind) and it leaked publicly that they were going to ask all their freelancers to significantly reduce their rates. So, doing the same work, but for less.

So many went along with the request. It blows my mind how willing we are to accommodate capitalism.

@stefano "consulting on Al is not part of our current agreement"

@stefano original agreement, minus a few things in your favour. Work out a few benefits

@stefano I dropped a client when my contact there started sending me ai authored responses to emails we're having between each other.

The giveaway in that instance was every reply contained a summary of everything that I'd said in the email that I'd sent to them. Rather than them. Just replying okay, thank you. It would be, thank you, I understand that I need to.. [insert every step that I wrote in my email].

on the one hand, a slap in the face

but OTOH, this is 100% SOP for the world of business

in the 1990s, there was a meme about how the last job an American factory worker had before being laid off was to train his Chinese ( or sometimes Japanese) replacement

@stefano Good for you. I've had similar (cut in contracting hours due to "business issues), then finding out the enterprise AI accounts cost too much. Besides -- they can use AI to do my work (Technical writer). F*** them.
