Also, companies want to collect the same data on kids ASAP. There's no material benefit to banning kids as far as they're concerned. Hence why some companies may opt to eat fines rather than change their business model.
But banning kids from social media is a lazy and counterproductive approach to solving the real problem, which is better addressed through robust privacy laws and more third spaces for kids to safely spend time in.

People say they want to stop predatory algorithms and stuff but the only real way to do that is by destroying the data harvesting and data brokers themselves.
Which no one in government wants to do because that's where most of big tech's money comes from.

@gwynnion I understand your point about protecting children online. I am from Gaza, where children face deeper struggles every day — fear, displacement, hunger, and losing their homes. I hope the world can protect children from all forms of harm, both online and in their real lives.

@gwynnion
Yeah they fully support these laws because flagging certain people requires persistent metadata about those people - how else will they know they're inappropriate - and using that to map more linked meta data they can then sell. Legal license to require more information that's consistent and builds better profiles for advertisement? Absolutely!It doesn't matter if the kids lie as long as the links are consistent. So that's their entire motive.

Then there are the political actors who want to disrupt conversations they don't like ( trans people exist, governments do evil shit, officials are corrupt, etc). Well you have to prove that's appropriate information for a 13 year old to see. Oh you're not 14, give me your exact voting information and let's see how I can weaponize that against you.Nobody actually cares about the porn. These people are fine with much worse. It's a window dressing thru can barely pretend with

@Oggie And the governments are hoping that once they can track you everywhere online and tie your speech and behavior to your legal identity, they can prosecute you into oblivion for disagreeing with them.
