If your cookie dialog doesn’t have a “reject all” button at the top level, or worse, doesn't even have the button at all and makes me uncheck 200 options of “legitimate use” manually, I consider you of highly dubious moral character.

@jamesthomson doesn't seem like a website worth visiting

@jamesthomson I want to meet the person who sees a cookie dialog and thinks “hm, yes, 110 advertising partners deserve a little treat today”
@isaaclyman @jamesthomson Maybe they even pay to show up as an advertiser. Kind of a marketing scheme?

@jamesthomson Sometimes I wonder if it's actual humans implementing those things. Like, someone has looked at it and thought "this is fine”, and then shown it to their boss and their boss is like "this is fine" ... on every single one.
I've never been able to bring myself to do it.

@jamesthomson
And I WILL uncheck all of them. -

@jamesthomson oh shit that reminds me, i need to add a "fuck cookies" to the footer on my website
-
@renardboy Look, maybe not an original thought, but it was annoying me!
@jamesthomson No I feel you, it's some sordid bullshit.
I seriously suspect that the "legitimate interest" cookies are enough for the data collectors to do all their nasty business. And then if you actually go through with unchecking those, this puts you in such an infinitesimally small user niche that they can (and do) track you that way all the same.
-
@digitalstefan Ugh, why would the UK do that?
@jamesthomson probably something political and I try to not get into political discussions on social media because … well it’s a shitshow.

@jamesthomson some of the largest sites think they can absolve themselves of responsibility by outsourcing their (in my opinion) deception to OneTrust - awaiting the litigation

@jamesthomson the dark patterns seem, in my opinion only, deep in OneTrust’s blood, and other offenders of course. One general pattern: the moment you uncheck a box or click customize, suddenly “accept all“ appears, shifts, or enlarges.
Generally this kind is behavior leads me to believe those involved do not care about their less technical family members, friends, or neighbors. If they looked at their family trees they would have to circle many ancestors who would be abused by their creations.

@jamesthomson And technically illegal in the EU! It must be as easy to reject all as it is to accept all cookies.

@jamesthomson
ever heard of fingerprinting ? so, even when you prevent cookies ...
Browser fingerprinting is a technique employed to surreptitiously collect data regarding a user’s web browser settings during their online activities. The collected data is then utilized to construct a unique digital identity, commonly referred to as a ‘fingerprint,’ for that specific user browser.

It’s also illegal in the EU (and, I think, California) -

I call them "American cookie warnings".Because they aren't legal in the EU.

@jamesthomson about the same feeling when I have to create an account to try an app

@jamesthomson
Since the GDPR states that the buttons should be of "equal prominence", "dubious moral character" is the least of their worries from a legal standpoint! -
