@dmoren @jsnell I’m sure the authors and publishers don’t want people talking about their books. … Wait.

@jsnell Infringing as in copyright? In a *review*?!

And who is asking for this? I would think publishers would be *delighted* to have people discussing their books, even if that means reciting some of the text. But why would Spotify care otherwise?

(As an aside, I’m really curious how they’re checking this — voice-to-text and AI-based comparisons?)

Spotify, already the bane of many podcasters’ existence, has decided to amp things up: Now it’s scouring podcasts to see if any infringe on “literary content.” It’s already flagged one podcast I host, which reviews/critiques an author’s books one by one, for “infringing” on the book. This is dire.

Just to follow up on this with some stats:

The podcast episode in question is 62 minutes long. More than an hour discussing a book.

Six minutes in, they quote the opening paragraph of the book, a total of 71 words. It takes 20 seconds.

What are we even doing here?

Also I guess I need to clear this up - I am hosting the files for someone else's show on my network. It's not my podcast, but it's on my network so I get the legal notices.

@jsnell I fear it will only get worse as fewer and fewer disconnected rich people buy corporations and install rules that do nothing but protect their profits. And by “protect” I fully mean insane fantasy delusional actions.

@Moltz @dmoren @jsnell The publicity department where I work is constantly sending out notices to podcasts and reviewers: please do not discuss our books or tell anyone they exist.

@jsnell My guess is that Spotify is working on more "make a podcast from this" generative AI features and they are rolling out a Content ID equivalent system to make sure users aren't making whole books into episodes... except they're doing it very stupidly.
