There is one interpretation that one could have: Since in the US people usually only speak English (and the British were quite proficient in their colonial phase), international events are mostly held in English. If the US wouldn't attend in Davos, the event might be done in the local language, which is German (de-CH).

But I guess even then, English is today's lingua franca. 1/

And then there is this story that in the early US, there was some kind of vote or discussion about whether to adopt English or German. I've read that is a legend and there was never a real chance that it would be German.

But either way, the US could have adopted German as a language and then it would be even funnier. 2/2

It seems to me that no one there would get a high school diploma. Okay, history is tedious, and it was at least five years ago. But even elementary school children know where penguins live…
