New from me: France is done with US big tech companies—arguably its moving away from American tech faster than other countries in Europe

The French government has built its own replacement for Google Docs/Microsoft Office. Cities, including Lyon, are moving to Linux and other tech. Open source is at the center of their efforts.

@mattburgess @onepict I hope the French government are also donating to OSS projects they're now depending on. They've got the resources.

Huh…actually, all of Europe financially supporting OSS would upend Big Tech’s stranglehold of tech.

@netopwibby @mattburgess I'm glad for the existence of @sovtechfund and @NGIZero (which was funded by the @EUCommission )

While @ngi is comming to an end, I hope this period of political turbulence and the danger of allowing the USA to have so much power over our technology will enable the EU and member governments to rethink it's stance on funding #NextGenerationEU

Fwiw, the @EUCommission uses #OpenLDAP with support from Symas. They certainly seem to have prioritized support of open source infrastructure, at least.

@mattburgess French here. While the government often announces grand plans to switch, its agencies tend to sign last minute deals with Microsoft in the end; while the private sector, especially startups, is firmly committed to Google.

@wobweger @mattburgess I don’t think we are ahead. There are various activities going on and one of our bigger municipalities are quite active. But I would not use the term “ahead” 😊

@mattburgess and the gendarmes (kinda like police, but they come from the military. They're nationwide whereas police are in cities only) have moved to Linux 10 years ago. Changed their whole infrastructure and developed their own applications. 👌

@mattburgess While this is great news, if the tools are owned and controlled by a minority of people in power in the government, this is only marginally better. What we really want is for workers and users to have power over their own tools.

@narF, marginally? Being able to hold people accountable on the same *continent* looks like a *massive* improvement 😅

New from me: France is done with US big tech companies—arguably its moving away from American tech faster than other countries in Europe

The French government has built its own replacement for Google Docs/Microsoft Office. Cities, including Lyon, are moving to Linux and other tech. Open source is at the center of their efforts.

For a moment I thought it said a replacement for GeoCities.

Yes they have their server on Mastodon, but I'm not sure that they are on any other part of the Fediverse

@narF, marginally? Being able to hold people accountable on the same *continent* looks like a *massive* improvement 😅

(Not meant harshly, just to emphasize the point 🙂)

@j9t Yes, of course its better. But I guess "how much better" depends on where you live. Here in Canada/Québec, we have pretty much no control on our government. So the result between privately-owned and state-owned is small.

Though, of course, it's a good first step. Regaining control over our government is doable if we can organize better.
