@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org @Stem@framapiaf.org How do you know it was?

Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t. I bet it wasn’t.

I can’t prove it, but you can’t prove it was either.

That’s why we can’t conclude anything about it.

"you can’t prove it was either" - I don't need to. That's how Statistics works

"That’s why we can’t conclude anything about it" - we can draw conclusions from a random sample of 25 people. If you had a degree in Statistics then you would know that already

@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social @Stem@framapiaf.org @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org If you have more serious studies than “a poll on the web” to prove that 90% of the whole population is against IA, I’ll take them.

But a poll on the web will never be a thing that we can use to conclude anything by itself.

@SmartmanApps@dotnet.social @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org @Stem@framapiaf.org If you ask 25 of your students, it’s not a random sample.

Even if you ask them to ask 25 other people too. Because the people they know aren’t random.

@SmartmanApps @breizh @Stem So, according to your logic, Smartman, if we would re-run the US presidential vote here (constrain: only with voter who have a Mastodon/Fediverse account since more than one year to exclude bot and newcomers) we would obtain the same result as the one reality gave us? Right?

Well, statistic or not, I wouldn't bet on that even a single Euro.

"Right?" - Wrong. Voting isn't compulsory, so you have to only poll people who are going to vote

@Stem @davidrevoy you know it’s really weird to just make shit up about statistical evidence

here’s a pivot to AI article from @davidgerard that links a Gallup poll and a heatmap survey with similar results concerning opinions on AI and data centers: https://pivot-to-ai.com/2026/08/25/everybody-hates-the-ai-more-and-more/

whenever we run polls it turns out the majority of people hate this shit regardless of what population is being polled

it’s uhh fucked to come on mastodon and claim to have statistical evidence and then just not link it

@light Quick evidences are sort of easy to find 'on the go' while browsing sometime on viral topics; you just need to check the profiles (profile name with a random word+four or five letter hash, generated avatar or no avatars, recently joined, have only history of comments like that and no 'normal' social media interaction).

But knowing exactly how many bots profiles percents on a social media, no. Knowing who own them, no. Knowing why, no. It's very opaque...

@davidrevoy When in doubt, deploy more booster sockpuppets. It's not like sentiment analysis can tell spam from actual data anymore.

I wonder how things are going back at the Amphora...these things *are* just terminals after all. Or how they're whispering into the ears of kings and courtiers.

@zzt i already got that the Pew one was fear of AI destroying humanity, which is not one fucking place in the actual report

                                      @davidgerard @zzt

Okay, hey, that's me you're misrepresenting again. You've gone from arguing with yourself about something I didn't write in a thread to arguing with yourself about things I didn't write across different threads. Which is a choice.

I said that it did not call out different reasons for people disliking AI, so conflated people who disliked it for rational reasons and people who disliked it for doomer reasons, the latter of which are actively pushed by OpenAI and Anthropic's marketing because they drive investment.

My point was that OpenAI and Anthropic's appeals to investors are likely to be causing problems for them. The more articles in the mainstream news that repeat their 'oh noes, our AI is so powerful it might accidentally destroy the world' press releases that they push to make it look like their systems do something impressive, the more normal people will have negative feelings about their products.

The Pew survey asks if you're more excited than concerned or vice versa, it doesn't ask why you're concerned. It does ask about concern over AI resulting in fewer jobs, but it doesn't differentiate between people who are worried about AI overinvestment crashing the economy (resulting in fewer jobs) and people who believe the hype that it can actually do a load of jobs.

@davidrevoy Sadly, people hating AI are just a loud minority, we have statistical evidences to prove it.
