    "Thirty-three states have banded together to sue Meta, alleging that the company was exploiting its young users on Instagram and Facebook for profit, including by collecting data from children without parental consent."

    The damages could be as high as $1.4 trillion, nearly the same as Meta's market capitalization at just above $1.5 trillion.

    @stefan
    I couldn't bear the lies, the court cases, the data thefts and more lies any longer and stopped using everything META from March 2026 onwards. People keep shaking their heads about my refusing to use WhatsApp for example. Sometimes I have to giggle remembering its tabloid function called "status". It's just a bloody tabloid rat hole to pull us into. Which nobody needs. I don't miss it.

            @stefan meta is considered "too big to fail" obviously so taxpayers $ will be used to bail them out if this case actually sticks somehow 😡

                Obviously not going to get my hopes up that we could see Meta completely wiped, but it will definitely be interesting to follow this case along.

                      @stefan Amazing it took this long to recognize that given that they've been doing it since like 2013 or so... I guess better more than a decade late than never.

                        @stefan Oh my gosh, South Carolina is actually in the list of states with Attorneys General who are suing Meta.
                        South Carolina rarely sues for the citizens. Only for the wealthy.

                          @stefan I wish the company could be sued out of existence and Zuckerberg banned from ever owning any form of social media or communications. He and his funder, Peter Thiel, should not exist in society.

                                  @stefan

                                  The case really heavily emphasizes YOUNG Facebook users. I'm worried that that means they'll have to meet a higher bar to prove Facebook was _specifically targeting_ young users. It so clearly causes harm to users of ALL ages it seems like that would've been easier to go after.

                                  Anyway, I am not a lawyer, so what do I know? I hope they crush them into the fucking Earth.

                                    @stefan I have to wonder when people are going to start asking where the parents are that are supposed to be parenting their kids.

                                        Imagine a case like this going on but governments all over the damn globe insist on giving them even more personal data for age verification.
