Don't e.g. Google, MS & Co offer their siloed mail services, providing access via the "Open Source IMAP protocol"? What kind of argument is this – just picking a tiny screw to drop the term "Open Source" in? Apart from me also doubting the "privacy preserving", given you need to ID yourself without need just to be able to use it. @_elena

I think there would be reasonable use case for this tool, not for social networking but as replacement for schools and institutions that presently rely on GAFAM services.
Instead of having school communications on Telegram or Whatsapp, having an institutional channel would be much better.
Beside that, the best part of social networking is to stay anonymous and interact with unknown people, not for misbehaving, but rather to speak freely.

I'm surely not saying this is the right answer but if #mastodon is so far more superior, why weren't there more efforts past two years to make it really sustainable. Relying on goodwilling citizens time, effort and money to keep up instances, is not the answer. By doing so, unfortunately, it's doomed to stay on the side, because you know, none of the people I know are here too. The #EU ís, by the way.
