Found it: every LLM breakthrough story reads like this old erowid story of someone who was addicted to taking LSD with nitrous oxide because the feeling that induced for them was that they were discovering the secrets of the universe:

(C/w in the story for self harm and everything else you'd expect in an erowid story)
    https://erowid.org/experiences/exp.php?ID=79725

the more I explored the Nitrous reality the more sense it made - of everything. I was starting to feel that I understood the intrinsic nature of the universe ...

I devoted my life to this 'faith' of mine - and my quest was to bring back some of these truths, and to find a way to share them with others - which I did in fact accomplish. I have kind of built an environment that almost guarantees arriving at this place. There is technology involved - it's all very complicated.

        @jonny

I'm into the "worried about his family" stage with Yegge.

He's used "addiction" in the past to characterize his relationship with chatbots, and described then as "energy vampires".

In this article he explains that he's hiding his usage from his wife, and that while the setup with a bunch of Google For Domains sock puppets would probably be a ToS violation for other people, it isn't for him because [🤷🏻‍♀️].

Just casually calling out several diagnostic criteria for addictive behavior right at the start of his grandiose rambling essay full of esoteric terminology, as you do when you're definitely not in a manic state.

Yeah, jinx, i knew I had recognized that kind of addicted rambling tone from another internet venue...

I would say that when I have let myself truly sink into an LLM that the drug effect of it certainly "works" - it certainly induces a profound sense of accomplishment and getting things done. I have tread delicately but I 100% understand how easy it is to generate a feeling of constant rapid progress when you just let go

Its always good when the 5 people who have invested significant proportions of their lives in your game are baffled and laughing at how broken everything is and need to constantly ask for a mods help to keep playing the game, the mod also being either confused or just an LLM itself

@jonny I've heard LLM use to be likened to using Cocaine, and I can really see that.

My one experience with coke was "well this is great but superficial and now my heart is beating a lot"

@davidgerard @jonny I was looking for the quote and I did find where he admitted burning billions of tokens. I then realized that he referred to "Sam Altman's solo unicorn contest" and further realized that "solo unicorn contest" sounds a lot like a euphemism.

@jonny What to me is doubly funny is that long ago Level 9 released a single player game on Amiga/Atari ST/etc called Knight Orc set in a MUD. It's got no modern AI, runs entirely on the machine and fakes a whole MUD player set more convincingly than this.

The gas town guy has like 12 $200 Claude subscriptions to run like 20 bots to automate churn in a 20 year old game with literally 5 players in it. 10 if you count all the level 1 players who just came to grief it. This is the true endpoint of all this: spending thousands to make nothing for nobody.

same number of players as Bomberman on the Sega Saturn

@jonny If I ever believe I have unlocked the secrets of reality, I hope I will give my technique a better name than "Gascid". If I name my instrument of cosmic revelation "Gascid", just fuckin' tase me or something
