Authenticity Problem

@davidrevoy I hate that I myself sometimes see genuine art and have doubts that it's AI. I guess it makes me pay more attention to the artist behind the art I see which is good.
Now that "looking like good art" is something that AI can do, paying attention to what it's conveying and who's making it is more important than ever.
I'll take community over mindless consumption everytime

@davidrevoy based on a true story*
@stefan @davidrevoy I've seen an artist change their style towards an intentionally more scrappy and wacky one, and the timing suspiciously matched that of the visual slop models becoming widely available.
Said artist has been putting out incredible work for the past 15 years and all the AI slop tends to look a lot like their older art.

@davidrevoy exactly the reason i despise all those youtube videos and such on how to "identify" AI art, every bloody time they just end up driving actual artists off the internet, while the slopsters don't give a damn about their callout posts
same with the em—dash

@coffee Though obvs. you have to consider that AI likely stole their earlier work.

@friboquen @davidrevoy David sure has some of the best comics (more so the non-AI related ones) around. Mini Fantasy Theater is great

@davidrevoy Great work as always. Also, I'm in pain now.

@stefan That's precisely what I mean. I posit that because AI stole all their work and now puts out very similar-looking slop, they probably got tired of being called out by morons online, and had to change their style out of desperation, simply to look more human.
I think it's going to affect a lot of professional artists: you simply can't draw well anymore without the fear of being mistaken for AI and having to fight the bullshit.
Hell, I'm learning to draw just to show AI a middle finger, and the comic I'm planning on releasing eventually will be done entirely with a pencil, a felt tip pen, and pastel charcoals in Concepts, and I'm going to keep the planning layer in the final works as the proof of humanity.

@davidrevoy
C'est sur aussi si tu ne met pas un certificat d'authenticité sans IA comment tu veux qu'on sache

@coffee well said
Also good luck and success on your artistic journey!
Even when AI made things a little more miserable as a whole.
You do see the effects very well by now as well, especially in crafts where people will feel like they need to post a video about the process of "how its made" in order to fight off slop-accusations. Though other arts are the same...
It is kinda sad I always have to stop for a split second and ask myself if something can be enjoyed or its just.
Its why I enjoy stuff like https://islieb.de/; (they are also on fedi but I don't wanted to drag them into here) or foxes in love (https://foxesinlove.net/) and of course David and all the other cool artsy people you can find on here

@stefan I appreciate the kind words!

Thanks for the support! Funny thing I wanted to plug here: I've never received comments like that here on the Fediverse
, but I get dozens of them, weekly, on the Meta platforms (Facebook/Instagram)...I'm really grateful for how this community checks artists' work and actually verifies it's real human art before throwing random accusations.
This is my favorite place to share for a reason.

@davidrevoy always happy to support ai artists! (Please don't kill me that was a joke!)

@csolisr anyone that sees more than one of your works can tell is not ia because ia cant replicate the originality of it for so long
edit: oh i didn't taged the op

@davidrevoy Not that I would compare myself to an artist, but in a similar fashion I have already been told that my prose (mostly technical prose—again, not an artist!) must have been AI-generated due to my propensity to use em dashes…
Damn it, I—and countless other writers—have been using em dashes long before those stochastic parrots came into being!

@dgouttegattat @davidrevoy Here, you might find this useful at some point.

@ghosttie Her fictive painting? The largest resolution I have for this color sketch is https://www.peppercarrot.com/extras/temp/2026-08-04_gothic-sorceress-fictive-painting.jpg
@davidrevoy @ghosttie this has a digital "impressionist" vibe for me. Such a contrast to your typical style for the webcomic.

@mirabilos @sinewave @davidrevoy No you don't. I used to work as a typesetter. I've had a keyboard shortcut for I-forget-how-many years to make it easy for me to insert a nonbreaking-space-and-em-dash combo, and I even wrote about using nonbreaking spaces like that over 16 years ago: https://kagan.mactane.org/blog/2010/07/10/typesetting-in-between-the-letters/
Some of us just care about typography.
