KDE Conf just wants to *talk* about going full A slop desktop
-
note how this promises a bunch of shit that AI coding doesn't even do slightly.
custom compiled desktops for every user! what?
(that's the Resonant Computing manifesto, a document completely detached from technical reality https://pivot-to-ai.com/2025/12/17/the-resonant-computing-manifesto-same-ai-slop-same-ai-guys/ )
this "talk" looks like someone at KDE has made the decision to go slop and is trying to generate the appearance of consent. you've seen this playbook repeatedly.
also this abstract was written with a chatbot
@davidgerard "See! See! We're the good guys! We use Firefox (slopped) and Nextcloud (slopped), just like you! And we're in the EU! We're different, let us love you back! *wink*"
This sovereignty angle is particularly abhorrent. At this stage, it's impossible to take such a proposal in good faith. -

fuckin
@davidgerard Should we try and put some pressure so they cancel the talk?
It probably wont work but trying's worth it no? -
@vatine @bms @davidgerard @jwz I just use https://github.com/doomemacs/core which is evil under the hood
-
@davidgerard @bms @zzt Ugh... What about GNOME (which I use)? I'm having a very cursory look at recently updated repos and I'm not seeing much slop. Evolution seems to be slopping, but I don't use it so whatever. I also see individual commits from months ago that seem more like experiments with the slop machine than a firm commitment. Any ideas?

Please note that a random talk in Akademy does not in any way mean an endorsement from the community. Neither speaker have contributed to the project in many, many years, and it is ridiculous and even deceitful to imply that this is in any way an official strategy that KDE is going to pursue.

@davidgerard "Personal AI has crossed the threshold where the desktop itself can be compiled per user, per device, per moment, from a small portable model of the user..."
Yes, because when I want to customize my Plasma desktop, I recompile the entire goddamn thing. Every time.
Very disappointing and infuriating to see this from my all time favorite DE.
-
@davidgerard @bms @zzt Good thinking! Let me dust-off my Sun SPARCStation and I'll be with you in a sec!

@davidgerard I still wouldn’t trust it to not wipe out my hard drive.
-
@davidgerard Seems rather normal for this kinda project.
It's a huge beast of project trying to compete with Windows and MacOS UI's that are long knee deep in this stuff.
Thankfully there's not a shortage of desktop toys to choose from.
@proinsias
That's not it. At this point, every major project related to Linux that still has some funding and is not some basement hobby of someone is basically corporate owned and operated. The corporate mandate is to maximize productivity and remove as many expensive devs as possible. So you get this everywhere. Also see the major drive to remove all GNU code from some heavy-weight distros and replace it with Claude rewrites in Rust.
@davidgerard -
@davidgerard "A desktop that loves you back has to know you."
"desktop that loves you back"
... do they want a relationship with their desktop via a chatbot?
what the fuck@lumi @davidgerard never felt the urge to fuck your desktop?
-
@lumi @zzt @davidgerard spoken like someone who isn't fucking their desktop
@skyfaller @lumi @zzt @davidgerard my thoughts exactly

@kde bro it's out there with your name on it, it's not "deceitful" to notice the URL and logos.
if you go straight to claiming commenting about the contents of your own damn website - and you're responding literally to me *linking* it - is "deceitful", a hit dog is hollering.
instead, please describe the process by which such an AI slop proposal - clearly chatbot spam - even gets this far.
EDIT: preserving comment at this timestamp

@kde @davidgerard > This talk is an invitation — from peple with a long arc inside this community — to take a serious swing at the question the 2003 study posed and never quite resolved: what would it take for KDE to be the desktop people actively choose, not just the one some of us settle for? Attendees will leave with: a concrete proposal (KaDAi) to react to or tear apart, a clear set of asks the project could direct at Plasma maintainers, and the framing for a sovereignty conversation that KDE is uniquely positioned to lead.
if these people aren’t involved in KDE anymore, having something like this in the description of a talk given during an official KDE event is what’s ridiculous and deceitful

@davidgerard@yo8rzz @davidgerard People to trying reduce man hours and outsource work not exactly a novel idea in the world of computers.
I'm happy I can chill on runit, xorg, window managers, some duct tape and lts systems for the next few years to watch the show unfold as America realize their copyright and copyleft systems are a bit silly.
As I can summon up custom window managers using current tooling and see others summoning up custom display servers and everything else one can imagine the future seems bright to me and KDE seems even more irrelevant to this than it has been for decades.

@zzt @vatine @bms @davidgerard @jwz is it new? I remember seeing claude stuff in the doomemacs repo back in March -

@kde Then why even give them the room to speak and push the slop forth, aside from having people come there to boo at and ridicule them for 40 minutes? The correct approach is to let them go speak somewhere else, we don't need to be sitting at the same table with promoters of fash tech. Attached, a good idea, from your own website. @davidgerard
