@Sylvhem i love inkscape and gimp, but can we all agree that gimp needs to change its name and get a real designer to make new tool icons?
@tito_swineflu @Sylvhem I mean, we can agree all we want (and I do), but time and again they’ve said they aren’t going to change the name. Better just to use a different product. Krita and Affinity are both free, and so much better.

https://krita.org/fr/donations/@Sylvhem gimp is trash. It literally hasn’t changed in any meaningful way in 26 years. It is lightyears behind every photo editing software. Decades ago it was a credible alternative, but today it’s worthless. They should just shutdown that project.

@jonathankoren Thank you for this very useful comment.

@Purple @Sylvhem
GIMP is trash.Its designed by software engineers interested in graphics programming, not artists or creators. They take no input from anyone who uses their product seriously or casually - none. They are incredibly defensive of their inappropriate name.
Ill never give them a nickel.

@mjibrower @Sylvhem affinity seems to only work on mac and windows, right?

@tito_swineflu @mjibrower @Sylvhem
I think it does.
And the now-free Affinity has Canva/AI slop options embedded in the thing, so unless you can get your hands on Versions 1 or 2 I don't recommend it anymore.

I think this issue with software like GIMP (or well, GIMP specifically as I've tried it before) is that it just doesn't work intuitively.
GIMP imo is one of the most frustrating pieces of software to exist, where nothing ends up working the way you expect it to, or want it to. I don't mean this to be disrespectful to the people who work on it, it probably works wonderful for them and that's awesome, but not for a large group of people.
Why these AI clones are getting popular instead is because they basically look and work exactly like software people already know how to use. It's slop, but it's the slop they know.

https://krita.org/fr/donations/@Sylvhem I learned how to use GIMP over time but it feels backwards even without any experience with photoshop. It improved a lot when they docked its windows by default. But layers, selections, gui layouts on highres screen, that all can be improved a lot.

https://krita.org/fr/donations/@Sylvhem As long as all "practical tests" are on how similar alternatives are to photoshop this is quite hard.... ( https://www.golem.de/news/photoshop-geklont-kann-adobe-einpacken-2610-214045-3.html )

> GIMP ... is that it just doesn't work intuitively.After using GIMP for 20 years on I'd say that the issue with software like Photoshop (or well, Photoshop specifically as I've tried it before) is that it just doesn't work intuitively.
It is not that GIMP or Inkscape is not intuitive, it is – just Photoshop user intuition was trained against the GIMP UX. The same with LO, Inkscape and almost any other FLOSS software.

@Sylvhem Remember when GIMP devs called a Black GNOME contributor a monkey? I remember. They're also the reason a certain infamous gangstalking forum has a thread on me.
Krita rocks though.
@noracodes @Sylvhem was it reported to GNOME's CoCC?
