@su_liam @barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette "The US is losing to a penny ante dictatorship in Iran,they can’t begin to cope with the rest of the world saying no."
But in the mean time they could pull the plugs on most European citizens' internet access and payment systems.
A continent unable to pay for any of the goods and services that they need on a daily basis.
NOT because they don't have the money but because the US has trashed the infrastructure.
Without firing a single missile.

Hasn't happened yet, so don't comply with the Nazis in advance.
Keep a cash reserve, keep a stockpile of food, and several months supply of medicine. You should be doing this already to help weather an illness or job loss.
-
@hsza @cavallette @david42 @barbra @anneroth id say thats the basis of all the power structures, they all expect you not to actually resist, making it easy to "deal to" the few who do resist, bonus points if you can equate "resisting the government" with "bad immoral action" or whatever
uh.. anyway, the threat is real regardless so.,,
@Li @hsza @cavallette @david42 @anneroth
Cripes, when did people become such milquetoasts? Never did a protest? Never told the cops to go Fuck themselves when they're in the wrong? Never contested ticket because it's easier to just pay up? Never contested a wrong bill or extra charges?
Every time you knuckle under just reinforces bad behaviour. Every time you resist bad behaviour makes it better for others to resist.

@hsza @cavallette @david42 @barbra @anneroth i dont disagree that its the right or better thing to do, and support them if they did do that and such but i also understand if they dont want to put themselves at risk, shit is fucking hard,
@Li @hsza @cavallette @david42 @anneroth
How is giving up to a foreign power without a fight helping anyone, especially when it says to all their users " be scared of the Orange bogeymam?"
What they did was say to the whole world "sorry you can't trust us to even try to do the right thing, sucks to be you." Turns out they didn't merit people's trust after all.

@barbra @su_liam @david42 @anneroth @cavallette We grow our own potatoes and onions so when we have finished harvesting the potatoes we will have 6-9 months worth stored in our cellar.
I have started buying spaghetti as it lasts well and wheat prices are set to rise.
Hot water and heating come primarily from wood, and we have full wood sheds.
The main things I need to do is get a back up power system for our water pump. Plus a small solar array somewhere in the garden.

What risk? That the US will send the Israelis to take them out?
-
@Li @hsza @cavallette @david42 @anneroth
What "sanctions and shit?" The US took over their DNS record. Big fucking deal. The US did that to the pirate bay, didn't stop them, did it?
I already proposed a workaround that doesn't require DNS at all. And would render future attempts at DNS hijacking impossible. Easy, cheap, fast - for once you CAN pick all 3.
-
@Li @cavallette @david42 @barbra @anneroth that sounds at least a little like cowardice if it’s a foreign state with no actual jurisdiction where you are
@hsza @cavallette @david42 @anneroth @Li
It sounds EXACTLY like cowardice. As for those saying "don't blame the victim", if they aren't willing to stand up for themselves by a threat from a bogeyman whose only power is to hijack your DNS record, why should we stand up for them?
Cowards. Absolutely.
-
@Li @hsza @cavallette @david42 @anneroth
That's bullshit. They wouldn't to to the extent of killing foreign nationals in their own country for something as minor as a leftist website. Too much chance of it going sideways.
-
@su_liam @barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette How do you get your money out of an American bank when you do not know that you are banking with an American bank?
Or how do you know that your payment systems will be blocked as they, at some point travel through US payment services space?
Your banking app that relies on Android verification services has stopped working as your Google account has been cancelled?
Want to take some cash out of a cash machine? With a VISA or Mastercard card?
@the_wub @su_liam @david42 @anneroth @cavallette
If you haven't already removed Google from your life you're part of the problem. Google is the #1 threat to an open internet.
-
@barbra @anneroth @cavallette I care as a user and as a server host if example.example resolves to different and uncoordinated DNS records, managed by uncoordinated people, on distinct global roots. It also complicates name certificates. You really don't want the people who own example.example on the ICAAN system and those who own it on the hypothetical EU global root to be able to impersonate each other's hosts.
@david42 @anneroth @cavallette
As a user wanting independence from the US, why would I give a shit? Pick one, ignore the other.Or if you could the DNS system entirely and only go with ipv6 addresses, impersonation becomes impossible. So again, why would I give a shit?
There's enough ipv6address space to give every train o of sand their own address. Domain names and DNS entries are just artificial scarcity.

@barbra @Li @anneroth @cavallette If A/I had tried this sort of thing, the Internet providers would've refused to keep them as clients.
Also, your "free" 10 TB of storage at home isn't free for folks who need to buy their disks and replacements when they fail, pay their electricity bills, account for their additional time managing their home server, etc.
@david42 @Li @anneroth @cavallette
Come off it. 24 TB disks are $600. Plenty of stock. If $600 is too much to spend to keep your organization going, then best to shut down and make space for someone else. That's 2 pizzas a month.
And it wasn't any internet provider freezing them out, it was the US hijacking their DNS record. One of these things is not like the other, to quote Sesame Street.
Not all of us are running potato computers at home. Some of us have decent home labs with lots of storage.Mine is 100 Terabytes, which is piddly compared to some who have a multiple petabytes.
-
@anneroth @cavallette And this is exactly why the loss of A/I can't be treated as some niche problem for the nerds.
We’ve been tracing how a 25-year-old autonomous infrastructure project ended up here, and what its loss means for everyone who depends on infrastructure outside corporate control:
https://sabot.media/post/kirk-to-ai
Let us have a thousand servers.
@AberdeenLocal1312 @anneroth @cavallette excellent work tying together the story.
This reinforces the idea that we need a Signal contingency plan. -

@barbra @hsza @cavallette @david42 @anneroth they have killed peopler overseas and justified it by saying their "terrorists" before

@barbra @hsza @cavallette @david42 @anneroth all cop actions are in the wrong, as are all fines and other shit .. that said, the power dynamics are real regardless .. i might do all these things, i do not have qualms towards those who do not, getting you to "not" is litterally the point,

@Li @david42 @anneroth @cavallette
The US hijacking someone's DNS entry to shut them down is a technical, not social, problem.
A technical solution is entirely valid. And easy enough tobdo.
@barbra @david42 @anneroth @cavallette the US having the power to control and override someones DNS (btw what source do we have this even happened.) is a social problem,
yes sure you can avoid it and give technical solutions to it .. but its a social problem
-
@AberdeenLocal1312 @anneroth @cavallette it is a loss, and we mourn it. but we can spin up their idea and concept a thousandfold instead and create a spiderweb!
@brabo @AberdeenLocal1312 @anneroth @cavallette I think the fall of A/I shows the futility of the services it provided being no longer relevant against an enemy operating from imaginary rules. Any replica will meet with the same conclusions. From here on, everything of consequence happens offline.

@Marloezovic @anneroth @cavallette Ik zou het graag willen luisteren maar op de NRC moet je wel een abonnement hebben.
Maar het blijkt wel hier toegangelijk te zijn. Al met een minute reklames in het begin van de podcast.

@anneroth @cavallette Europe should put "The Heritage Foundation" on the European terrorlist.
All for it. My nomination: how about putting that awful data-replublican, musks most influential one-woman todeslistenersteller, on the list of sanctioned individuals? Doing these lists for political reasons is already a crime in germany, and she made lists w/ individuals in iran, nicaragua, venezuela and germany…
(just incase some germans still think we aren't a top priority gop/MAGA target or buys the dumb buffoon act they like to put on.)
