      @aral Europeans are waking up to the fact that the EU has been a giant market funding US tech for decades

        @mike Me to the European Parliament: “why are we acting like an unpaid research and development department for Silicon Valley?”

          @aral fascinating. I've followed you.

          It's crazy all of the "I don't know why startups hate us" and "why don't we have more tech firms like America?" I hear coming out of the European continent.

          The simple fact is that the Americans dominate the market and have totally unrestricted access to the EU.

          Money gets siphoned out of European consumers and into silicon valley tech salaries.

          We're long overdue a change

            @mike @aral I recommended my (former) employer back in March 2025 (right after Trump fired every data protection civil servant) to move away from Google Analytics if they don't want to pay hefty fines, and that was long after Schrems I and Schrems II had already made it clear that relying on US tech is a shaky foundation.

            My employer preferred to threaten to fire me rather than listen to me because I had used the words "Trump" and "fascist coup" in my pitch after JD Vance basically declared war on Europe at the Munich Security Conference.

            Except for a few privacy-minded folks here on Mastodon, I think nobody is yet waking up. They are all still asleep at the wheel, still using Google Analytics. And like with GDPR in 2018, executives will panic when they're "suddenly" confronted with hefty fines and can't meet the deadlines because "nobody warned us in time".

              @davidculley @aral interesting.

              I really never looked at this through the lens of that political / IT cross section before but you're absolutely right.

              These guys will fly into a foreign country and kidnap a president. Why wouldn't they abuse their data access
