    @michelestrider
    Yep. Followed the same trajectory as the gentrification of trendy neighborhoods:
    • young artists do cool stuff
    • young people doing cool stuff attracts attention
    • attention attracts money
    • young artists are priced out
    • money chases money
    • eventually billionaires arrive, ruining whatever's left

    @australopithecus @michelestrider

    I have personally seen this happen twice in Huntsville, Alabama.

      @michelestrider The thing is, you can go to Burning Man and never interact with the billionaires. They might as well not be there (in every sense).

      @adamrice @michelestrider perhaps, but the takeaway stays.

        @argonaut @michelestrider What I’m saying is, the experiment has not gone to hell. Maybe to heck.

          @michelestrider i have a feeling, albeit empirical, that it is things going to hell that bring billionaires, like culture-eating moths to the fires of societal failure.

            @michelestrider Intrinsically true. But I'd track back further still: hell goes active the second we believe that fake kindness deserves our financial support.
            Denominations simply become arbitrary after that.

                      @michelestrider as soon as it becomes just about making money, it sucks. i don't know why people don't see this. they ruin everything, but people are like, 'this is the best system ever ... it can never be changed.'

                        @arrrg @michelestrider once your event has a $3000 ticket and a 20m USD budget shortfall its really just a desert grift.

                          @michelestrider if they replaced the man with a random billionaire in attendance every year, things would turn around right quick.
