Our government has been touting new data centres that have been established here to give us data sovereignty. But guess who runs them? AWS and Microsoft, for two.
Having the hardware on our soil is just an illusion of data sovereignty in my opinion (but I am not a tech expert).@Em0nM4stodon As a further matter of interest, the banks here no longer accept or issue cheques (checks). So, we do not even have any form of manual fall-back system.

@Em0nM4stodon It's absolutely required when you're building a system out like this... The first site that went live had its first major event only about a month in - a fibre cut happened disabling all external network access to the hospital (including the backup!)
- it was resolved fairly quickly within a day but yeah - you absolutely need 'old school' backup solutions for stuff like this 🫠It's a matter of when, not if.

Is your country prepared?@Em0nM4stodon on the whole, I’d say no, they’re not ready. But I think that’s more to do with the belief in the current mind rot passing, or the very real possibility of those companies actually leaving the US if it doesn’t.
The US is a very small market when compared to the rest of the world, those orgs would sink by quarter end. Way over-invested in infrastructure overseas, and I’d imagine it would be seized by government very quickly due to importance as critical national infrastructure.
That doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be a digital cataclysm in the interim. There definitely would.
From my standpoint, I’ve been designing resilient systems for a long while, and that means controlling the software and infrastructure, which is deeply unpopular but the only way to avoid these outcomes.

A minicomputer as in a small computer or a minicomputer as in, like, a PDP-11? If you got Windows 2000 to run on a mini then that's extremely cool.

An other Compaq/HP still starts with XP Pro, at least did so a year ago.
And, I resurrected my Aspire One netbook running W8.1 last year. Had died on the SSD, but running again with the last HDD before it. -

For work I would be mostly fine but our customers are dependent on Microsoft and Amazon and some of there services they get from as are connected to azure and co. So there will be an impact. Also I don't know about the dependencies the Datacenter and power companies have. Electricity is very important. So the impact will be at least indirectly.

The US has passed two laws (one under Biden, the other under Trump) which explicitly give the US government access to data hosted by US companies regardless of the physical location of the hosting equipment. They have to request it but that's a mere formality.
Not too long ago a Microsoft official confirmed this while speaking in France, and said they will comply.

@BubblegumYeti @Em0nM4stodon Stored in the EU provides almost zero protection. Your cloud is still run by a US company that WILL comply with US orders to exfiltrate your data and/or turn off the access.
@guigsy @BubblegumYeti @Em0nM4stodon the "cloud" of my company is inside the building. Files, websites, email. We don't use any external infrastructure except the line. Windows should continue to Work as it is not connected to Azure.
For private stuff, I use nextcloud, hosted inside the country. I also use a VPN to connect to my files at home.
Only problem remaining is Android for banking and ticketing apps.
