I had a request for this one (text provided, believed to be correct, in part based on it being used by an "angry Welsh person") 😆

@eclectech my russian is outdated by 15 years, but closest to ffs i can think of is “какого хера?” (verbatim, with which dick?). @mynameistillian can you verify?
@kym @eclectech i think for fuck's sake is a bit more semantically different than какого хера, because the latter is more of a "what the fuck" type of exclamation, i.e. amazement or shock, meanwhile ffs is more "i am so done with this"

@mynameistillian @eclectech then what would be closer to ffs? еблось оно все конём?

@kym @eclectech i think profane turns of phrase like "ёбаный в рот" or "ёб твою мать" fit more

@mynameistillian @eclectech thanks! as i’ve said, my russian is rusty plus i tend to go off the standard expressions for some flare. invoke a rusty anchor etc.

@kym @eclectech "якорь мне в жопу" is a very vibrant and funny variant, but much nonstandard lmao

@mynameistillian @eclectech btw, it’s ёб твою мать” and “ёбаный в рот”. poor Ё gets omitted these days

@kym @eclectech fair, fair!

We are definitely on.
Have already seen that it's not going to be a translation as such, which is fine (and exactly why I wanted to ask Proper Human People).
It is definitely the sense and usage of FFS I'm after.
So... whatever you mutter under your breath when you see the news headlines in the morning, that's what works.
But if you can give me a literal translation too that would be ace - already a couple of interesting ones in the thread

@eclectech I think there might be no German equivalent, all I can think of is actually just "what the fuck/hell/...". So I tried to come up with a direct translation, and I think "um Fickeswillen" is a good thing to say in a dismayed way. Although "fickhalber" or "fickeswegen" sound fun too, but they're more practical words, more of a literal "I did this for the sake of fuck".

@eclectech In Dutch, and currently living in The Hague, I would say something like "Krijg nou de tering!", or in local dialect spelling: "Krèg nâh de tering!".
We Dutch love to curse in disease-related terms, this would wish TB on something/someone, but in a general meaning, it would be closest to FFS.
(See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_profanity#Profanity_related_to_illness_and_diseases)
@leonieke My friends from The Hague would say, "Krijg nou tieten!" (Now get tits). Probably an attempt to avoid the disease, but still baffling. @eclectech
-
@eclectech In french I'd translate as "bordel de merde" (lit. "shit brothel"), or just "bordel" for short.
@laomaiweng @eclectech My French friends expanded this to "Merde putain bordel!"

OK, lets give this a shot. Basically with my linguistics skills I will be able to do ONE more. That would be quite a short series. To make it longer a fedi collaboration will be required
If you fancy helping please let me know how to write "for fuck's sake" in your language (native, or one you're pretty fluent in - no literal translations from machines please).
Of course the big question is whether it's used elsewhere?
It *might* be a very short series

@eclectech In Dutch I'd say, "Wat zullen we NOU krijgen?!" It doesn't swear, but the meaning is the same.

@EllenB @eclectech Hahaha, yeah, that's the more polite one

As a Welsh learner, I grapple with mutations (where the spelling of a word varies depending on grammatical factors).
Of all the letters in the Welsh alphabet, the only ones not involved in mutation at any point are FF and S, which always amuses me, as FFS is what I often think while trying to learn mutations.
I can never decide whether Welsh changing the spelling of words base on the previous / next one is more or less confusing than English’s choice to change the pronunciation but not the spelling (e.g. the apple, the pair).

@kym @eclectech "якорь мне в жопу" is a very vibrant and funny variant, but much nonstandard lmao
@mynameistillian @eclectech trying to think of kazakh equivalent for ffs. the only closest that comes to mind is “түф” with the elongation of the vowel

Considering making this the first in a series. A multilingual collection of "for fuck's sake".
I could eventually make a poster of colourful global disgruntlement.
@eclectech Just as an afterthought: in Friday Night Dinner the father always used "shit on it" and for sure that would work well as a colourful Image.

@LappenjammerDieZweite Hah, you're not wrong - have added that to my notes for when I run out of FFS (just gathering everyone's replies from yesterday and the list is Quite A Size

@eclectech
ffs for me has always been - ferrets farts sake.@PhilRudland This is by far the sweetest post in my notifications as a result of this thread.

@LappenjammerDieZweite This one is definitely going to need some polling too. In some languages there seems to be a lot agreement, others have a wild (and very entertaining) variety.

@eclectech Talking of German, somethibg we could possibly agree on is "Fickscheisse" (or FCKSCHSS for short) as we love our compositive words
