@EUCommission Maybe you could just rely on free market itself and instead of adding more mandatory obligations, just make possible create spare parts, service and allow to create whatever parts without need of license/approval to do so? A mandatory revealing schema after some time would be welcome too.

@The_ERROR @EUCommission Ah, the free market... that's known for making things simpler for the users and not at all invested in maximising profit with complete disregard to its customers. Regulations are necessary to keep the "free" market reined in and more in service of the people.

@EUCommission What does “Should I Toss My Broken Tech? > Do I hate money? > Yes > A bit!” even mean?

And what does hating money have to do with repairability?

I don’t recall the last time I saw such a nonsensical and poorly made decision tree.

@The_ERROR @EUCommission Incidentally, requiring the delicensing of parts and repair methods is also an interference in this "free market" — and one that IP holders will refuse to comply with. (though posting schematics with devices sold was extremely common until like the 90s; peculiar...)

Your phone breaks. Your washing machine gives up. Somehow, buying new seems cheaper than repairing.

The EU is making the Right to Repair the new standard in Europe.

✅Repairs must be offered even after your warranty ends
🔧Parts must be available after the model is no longer sold
📅Choose repair under warranty and get an extra year of legal coverage
📍An EU platform will help you find local repair shops and fair prices

Less waste, more repairs. Good for your wallet, even better for the planet.

@EUCommission Also this is kinda funny in the light of being forced to buy a new phone if I want to interface with my health insurance company, because some "security requirements" enforcing a minimum of Android 14.

Because as we all know, even if I could install an off-brand OS on my otherwise perfectly functional device, with proper security updates, it would still be banned by banks and other stuff because it's not Genuine American Corporate Lord Android.

@EUCommission parts should be sold at a price that makes repairing financially attractive. Bosch is bundling cheap parts with the most expensive part of their washing machines, making a repair nearly just as costly as replacing the whole machine. That's not viable for repair shops or anyone really.

@EUCommission WHEN? I have this fridge-freezer I can no longer find insulation joints for (at least not at a price where it isn't cheaper to buy new).
Price needs to be factored in. Sod new models with built-in obsolence, improve the old olds.

@EUCommission Well, washing machines are very much repairable with parts that cost just few € even today. The problem is, ever since everyone replaced stainless steel tubs with plastic ones, just replacing the drum bearings has become such crazy time consuming and labor intensive task because you need to lift entire drum, tub and motor assembly out of the chassis. It used to be so much easier before... But it's so much easier and cheaper to manufacture...
