There was this consensus of not going to X after Elon Musk turned it into a right-wing hellhole but I see more and more especially journalists going back "because the AI people are there".

Yes, because the "AI" folks mostly agree with right wing talking points because that's what the whole idea of "AI" is build upon. That's a bad argument for relegitimizing X.
@tante Unfortunately it still has network effect for whatever reason, much like instagram, even though its slowly dying and likely propt up by bots.
Journalists, especially freelancers, who live off eyeballs are beholden to finding subscribers and viewers.
I don't like it, but I understand it. I'm blown away how there hasn't been a single platform alternative to bring in the death blow at this point. But social media is now conflated with addiction... without that addiction, most people will just not use it.

@tante Apparently self control and common sense are in short supply.
-
@tante frankly, is xitter2.0 aka "bluesky" so much better, in that aspect?
Idiots follow hype trends. Shitty "influencers" seek numbers. Idiots follow trends created by "influencers". And the lions, erm, "influencers" stay near where the zebra are.
::breaks into song:: IT'S THE CIRCLE OF.... shit.

@tante The journalists were virtue signaling. They were cool with Twitter all along and with the whole fascist vibe. They want a seat at the table with the fascists. We’ll only hear them complain about fascism if they aren’t included. So long as they get that seat they’ll act like everything is cool.

@tante right wing hellhole people / ai people venn diagram:
️@misterdave @tante it'd be more accurate if the diagram was an asshole.

PBS doc Ghost in the Machine talks about how the text guessing machine is deeply rooted in eugenics

@tante
so weird statements from both sides.some AI folk may be there, but that's because X/thread/etc. is where avg. people use.
while AI itself isn't necessarily be right wing' stuff, but left wing bros mostly killed the good players -
@tante @der_exil_hesse social.netdynamics.eu will be happy to welcome you on the fediverse, with all the advantages of Mastodon and without its limitations.

I left X when I came over here. I just couldn't take any more. At the time, I was still working - and I quit as much to avoid the bad reputation X carried with it.
I can't remember when Twitter was ever cool

Not just that, but the AI people there are the TESCREAL, Silicon Valley types, and journalists still getting their stories from Xitter is why this conception is amplified and presented as given in media discourse.

@glyph @tante the one problem with that metric is fedi tends to have a higher rate of fall off. People join, stay active for about a few months, then stop being active.
There is a sort of worrying consistency to the number of active users, despite people signing up all the time.
There are definitely a few factors to this, but it's something many of the devs connected to various parts are trying to figure out if they can improve. I think mastodon follow groups was one attempt at this.
@theeclecticdyslexic @glyph @tante
Mastodon isn't designed to be addictive, unlike a lot of other social media systems which do their best to create an addictive feed.
I am not surprised that people try out non-addictive things and then stop. That feels healthy. That falloff in use is, in a healthier world, probably what more things would see.

@passenger @theeclecticdyslexic @glyph I wouldn't say that Mastodon "isn't designed to be addictive". It shares a lot of the foundational logic of those kinds of platforms and therefore inherits some issues.
-
@passenger @theeclecticdyslexic @glyph sure. Mastodon is trying not to move in that direction and to limit harms. It's a lot better than many other networks in that regard. I just wouldn't give it a full pass.
