    @mcc

    Four backends? I know of LLVM, GCC, and Cranelift, but what's the fourth one?

    @argv_minus_one @lispi314

    The fourth backend is this guy named Mutabah.

    https://github.com/thepowersgang/mrustc

    Now, looking, I now see that he may be using Claude. What I remember is the last time I looked at this was three or four months ago and there weren't Claude signals, but also at the time it had been dormant for a while. I don't know why people think that resurrecting a dead project by starting to use claude is better than leaving it dead, but they seem to think this.

      @argv_minus_one @lispi314 Nevertheless, the fact it *did* have a dormant period means that it is easier to find a fork point than it would be with, for example, LLVM, especially because this implementation is all-in-one. The downside: C++. The entire goal here as far as I'm concerned is to avoid writing C++.

        @ireneista @mcc @decay @amarioguy That's a good particular example. A part of computing freedom that I think is pretty important is "being able to make music with computers, ideally in realtime." I have that on my list of vital user stories for my someday project microkernel OS. The arts are the kind of thing that make computers worth doing.

        A lot of realtime music plugin stuff depends of Fourier transforms and SIMD in general.

        @MaddieM4 @mcc @decay @amarioguy yeah, absolutely. those are our reasons for bringing it up, as well. thank you.

        we have given this topic thought, even if we don't have those thoughts organized in a way that makes them easy to present 🙂

          @amarioguy @mcc @MaddieM4 one hopeful note

          in our experience when a company is very big on having NDAs around its tooling, it's because there's nothing hard to replicate about the tooling itself, once you know the basic idea of it

          we suspect people who do chip design can already basically say, yeah you need these specific types of simulator to eliminate whatever specific classes of problem

          that seems like a thing the community could take on, in principle

          @ireneista @amarioguy @mcc @MaddieM4 there are *so many* random missing pieces that you might not even have thought about yet that are possible "in principle", but we're struggling to remain optimistic that herding the cats is actually possible

          there's "flagship-ish" missing tooling for things like "optical proximity correction" that people at least know about, but did you know that we basically don't even have a f/oss general-purpose optics simulator yet?

              @r @amarioguy @mcc @MaddieM4 we did know that.

              it's a big task. we think the immediate next step is to try to list out all the important types of simulation and what they're used for.

                @mcc anyway yeah you're right we do need a kernel. Something that goes "here's file system, video, sound, and input" and then from there things get a lot more manageable. At least for games

                    @argv_minus_one @lispi314 I have blocked the user "Claude" on github. This causes GitHub to display a warning banner whenever there are commits advertised as being done with Claude's agent thing. The banner is glitchy and sometimes lies. However looking, I find these commits from August. It is possible the banner stems from this single third party PR.

                        @argv_minus_one @lispi314 However, merging a PR that is specifically marked as Claude-coauthored (it's very much the case not all Claude code has this marking) is a strong signal a maintainer doesn't care very much either way about the embrace of AI coding assistants by the open source community. So this may indicate other things to come in the near future.

                          @ireneista @amarioguy @mcc @MaddieM4 in the microfabrication space, there's also proprietary process simulators (things like "if i do ion implantation with these parameters and then annealing with these other parameters, what will the resulting dopant concentrations be?") that are probably simple enough mathematically, but it's certainly not something that we see people jumping up to build

                          some entity on fedi is/was trying to fix some f/oss e&m field solver's documentation so that it becomes "actually usable", but afaik it's still some ways off

                          in university, even the *power electronics* simulator we were taught was proprietary (no, SPICE is not optimal for many of these circuits). guess we somehow need to magically make "critical-infrastructure-ish" work (motors, transformers, power converts) sexy?

                            @eniko it's a bit difficult for me to describe since i've only heard about it myself recently, but it's a set of building blocks for building "anything" on any sort of system, be that applications or games, on embedded hardware or on top of existing operating systems
                            here's the site if you want to spelunk around that https://arcan-fe.com/, i really encourage you to watch the presentation when you can though, it does an excellent job of describing things

                                    Rust wgpu now has a .agents/skills, a .claude/skills, an AGENTS.md, and a CLAUDE.md.

                                    Increasingly wondering if my goal of living in a way that I never benefit from the actions of generative AI users and generative AI users never benefit from the actions of me is going to inherently mean never using hardware-accelerated video on a computer again.

                                    @mcc For devil's advocacy, simulated annealing is a (very simple) form of generative AI, and it has been used for semi-automated chip layout design for decades.

                                      @amarioguy @ireneista @mcc @MaddieM4 oh the field solver (openEMS) has been around for longer than that, the problem has been that it was impossible to use unless you were also a grad student working in that space

                                      @r @ireneista @mcc @MaddieM4 right right, the point is more "there is active work being done in the open silicon space that definitely wasn't happening in the last decade or so"

                                        @MaddieM4 @mcc sadly i suspect for most casual people (not nerds like us, like the average person you'd see elsewhere and to be very clear i am VERY supportive of this goal of a proper open sourced GPU) unless it's at feature parity with NVIDIA (which i hear those kinds of drivers and underlying firmware/ISAs are nightmares to develop and maintain) i doubt much outside nerd-sphere would care enough to even gain significance

                                        that + the fact that i also hear it's apparently ruinously expensive to develop GPUs (like everything about them i hear is only getting more expensive by the day, especially on the performance side) that a serious one would likely have serious maintainability issues i fear

                                        @amarioguy Much of the ruinous expense comes from ordinary chips being write-only, and modern GPU design being immensely complicated. FPGAs suffer from these problems a lot less. In foreseeable future, we might even see FPGAs that bump their manufacturing yield up by dynamically routing around a couple of bad logic cells on the die.

                                        @MaddieM4 @mcc

                                          @ireneista @amarioguy @mcc @MaddieM4 ohhhh we are very interested in this, i think you're the first we've seen to *name* this

                                          we've definitely been around the block with hellprojects such as "how much can you overengineer a pub-sub system while still having your robot run?"
