torvalds is really speedrunning all the major “dickhead manager discovers the slopbot” points
-
@zzt he is absolutely going to take the kernel closed source. dude is seething https://mastodon.social/@nixCraft/117451818001188131
@tael @zzt This is the message Torvalds sent that I read the other day that pissed me off so badly that, even though I was already struggling with insomnia, *made it worse*.
(it did get me to stop looking at my damn phone). It's just such an angry, self-righteous, and absolutely fucking *wrong* take we've seen so many times. And he's being such a huge fucking baby about it (just like, as stated, every other booster). And it's coming in response to one kernel developer just trying to put up *some* reasonable expectations and trying to push back against the idea that they don't need to train new people in kernel development. -

It is, hilariously enough, something new and unique that is somewhat unlike anything that has come before! That does not mean it is *good* or that it does what you are claiming it does. It is very good at: attacking labor, providing justifications for shitty behavior, enclosure, propaganda, and misinformation. It's pretty much shown to be "not that useful" for everything else when any reasonable metrics are applied to it.
He's definitely 6 months to a year behind on his propaganda and that is really frustrating since he effectively gatekeeps the kernel, which is wildly goddamn important. -
and I am serious about this: if you want to predict what torvalds will say and do next, look at what AI boosters in power did months ago. he’s following the playbook to a T, and he’s digging up all the old justifications.
that makes it rather easy to shout back, of course, but torvalds isn’t (currently) afraid of that. he believes himself to be immune to shame.
@zzt Also aligned with the techbros, he believes his project to be "too big to fail".
You can interpret that two ways of course.

got my first “why so angry” from some oblivious motherfucker
tell me, gang. read torvalds’ words and tell me why I’m so angry
Imagine clutching your pearls about directing harsh words at Linus fucking Torvalds. The perkeleen vittupää famous for being so sensitive about flinging insults over technical disagreements.

"when our labor is stolen that’s a personal betrayal"
I don't understand how more people don't see this. They're strip-mining the internet and selling it back to you via taps that they control. It's crazy to me that people are so quick to willingly surrender to what is clearly a new form of mass oppression that's taking root.
I'm already dealing with fresh college grads who can't arrive at solutions without prompting, it's extremely alarming every time I run into these people in classes.
Also, as an aside, the people who are okay with slopping code but don't like it when art is slopped are a whole other enigma to me. Like, do you just not value your work? Is that it? -

@zzt But yes, the entire reason Linux became big was because the GNU Mach kernel project was in development hell, and then Linus posted a hobby project as part of a rebuttal to a debate with one of his professors that was Good Enough to make the GNU coreutils standalone. Hell, remember the original posting Linus made? He never wanted it to become big! But it did anyway and now we're all paying the price
@techokami @zzt Andrew Tanenbaum right? I remember we had books from him for our systems courses in computer science.

"We see a future where intelligence is a utility like electricity or water and people buy it from us on a meter and use it for whatever they want to use it for," he added"

It's why they've had books destroyed after scanning them for AI, with the intention of forcing us to depend on AI's regurgitated output when they originals can no longer be found.
This is by design and goes beyond just AI vomit infecting open source. 🤬

@techokami @zzt Andrew Tanenbaum right? I remember we had books from him for our systems courses in computer science.
@workingclassgames @zzt Yeop! Andy made a academic-only UNIX clone that was part of the inspiration as well as part of Linus' coursework
-
@zzt I might write a more detailed version of this later on tonight, no promises
@zzt teaser for the thing I am writing:
"This resulted in Stallman taking the first draft of his unhinged plans to make a UNIX replacement and nailing them to the doors of the net.unix-wizards and net.usoft newsgroups in September of 1983." -

"apparently Berkeley pulling off a Ship of Theseus with the entire UNIX operating system really pissed off the phone company." -

@zzt yeah I'm hitting the weird shit in UNIX history to talk about this one kid's hobby project

@workingclassgames @techokami @zzt tanenbaum is cool as fuck amoeba is one of the five interesting OS designs ever made
-
@zzt @davidgerard I've noticed boosters use that whataboutism to cope with the fact people usually don't want to deal or engage with their slop.
@steppe_lord @davidgerard @zzt
whataboutism is often a tactic and call whistle of Ur-Fascism

@hipsterelectron @workingclassgames @zzt if Minix wasn't licensed to be academic-only until the 2000s things would be much more different
shame nobody wants to revive Minix 3. Except Intel for their CPUs.

@hipsterelectron @workingclassgames @techokami @zzt No way, Python was apparently developed for this OS first???
-
@techokami @zzt Which one? I've ripped into him a lot over the years...
