@h3mmy @alexchapman I'm not sure but I think the original original use of pinging as a verb was on submarines where they sent out a sonar "ping" to see if anything was nearby? It actually sounded like a ping.
@EmilyMoranBarwick Ahhh that's a good point, thank youI'll try to rewrite it so it's clearer, and I also ought to mention that some apps don't show the redirect.By the way it's not just the message, it also prevents people following the old account.
@lxskllr I had a quick look at the Mastodon Github issues about this, and as far as I can tell MP3 conversion happens due to browser compatibility?MP3 seems to work pretty much everywhere but some browsers have (or had) problems playing Opus in websites. I'm not sure if this is the case any more though, as shown by the discussions in these issues. The issues I looked at are:https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/11131https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/17037https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/14616
p.p.p.s. Attached a screenshot of the latest version of this scam post. It's similar to the original but slightly tweaked. It's a scam, it isn't really from Mastodon support. The scammers are trying to trick people into giving them their card details.Genuine server admins will never ask you for card details. If you see this scam, please report it straight away by clicking ⋯ under the scam post and then "Report". Make sure you select the option to forward the report to the origin server.
p.s. If you're using the desktop or mobile website and can't find an option any more, try clicking "⋯ More" on the right of the screen. A lot of options have been moved there in the new update.p.p.s. The next update (4.5) sounds very exciting. It will apparently introduce creation of quote toots and also remote fetching of complete conversations (so that everyone can see all the posts in a conversation no matter what server they're using). This is due at the end of the year apparently.
