@Tutanota @GrapheneOS the only problem is that as of now GrapheneOS is only compatible with Pixel phones.
From next year it will be compatible also with some select Motorola phones, not clear for now when and which ones.
Short-term solution will be moving to some other Android-ish flavor (HyperOS, ColorOS, ...).
Switching to iOS won't fix anything, as it's already where Google is going
We definitely need a 3td alternative, soon.

    @Tutanota @GrapheneOS

You don't need to use Graphene to escape Google's monopoly, and if you are looking for large coverage, that's antithetical to Graphene's goals.

@Goodlucksil @Tutanota @GrapheneOS My understanding is that GrapheneOS' compatibility limits are set by the hardware, or lack thereof, not by some policies or intent.
Can you name a phone OS alternative that can be used right now for your everyday phone?

This undermines one of Android’s defining features: the freedom to install software from wherever you choose. 😤

@Tutanota @GrapheneOS Once fraphine becomes accessible with Talkback out of the box, I'll most certainly support it. Has any progress been made finding a tts engine that complies with licensing restrictions and can be bundled?

You can buy a cheap used Pixel 8.
This will give you 2 more years to wait for new motorola smartphones to enter the market and also see what will happen with new Pixels.

@Tutanota A shame Google went through with this... Yet not surprising coming from them. The openness of Android served them in the early days of Android to attract people, against big bad "Apple's locked down Iphone". Now it's in their way.
I used to recommend Fdroid to friends and family. Happy #murena_eos user myself (never had a graphene compatible device to try it), but I can't imagine recommending flashing a ROM to just anyone, not everyone is ready to take that big a step.

Well, we do have some "3rd alternatives" such as Ubuntu Touch (shipped with Volla Phones) or Sailfish OS (shipped with Jolla Phone)

🚨 GOOGLE IS KILLING ANDROID FREEDOM. 🚨

This #DiDay we call on you to take action & sign the petition:
                                    https://www.change.org/p/keep-android-open-stop-google-from-limiting-apk-file-usage

Because Google must not decide what you can & can't download on YOUR Android device.

This undermines one of Android’s defining features: the freedom to install software from wherever you choose. 😤

#Android is supposed to be open, & your phone should be yours → NOT GOOGLES.

It’s time to support open alternatives like @GrapheneOS ✊

@Goodlucksil @Tutanota @GrapheneOS My understanding is that GrapheneOS' compatibility limits are set by the hardware, or lack thereof, not by some policies or intent.
Can you name a phone OS alternative that can be used right now for your everyday phone?

@The_Universality Indeed, still a very short list of compatible phones unfortunately.
To make a difference we need broad compatibility, enabling phones with low price tags,.
Android and iOS set the bar quite high, people expect lots of features to just considering changing something that "just works" for them, not to mention the price point.
Also most people aren't technically savvy, so don't understand - hell, even care about - the privacy implications of their choices.
                                        But I'm digressing..
