GOOGLE IS KILLING ANDROID FREEDOM.
This #DiDay we call on you to take action & sign the petition:
https://www.change.org/p/keep-android-open-stop-google-from-limiting-apk-file-usageBecause Google must not decide what you can & can't download on YOUR Android device.
This undermines one of Android’s defining features: the freedom to install software from wherever you choose.

#Android is supposed to be open, & your phone should be yours → NOT GOOGLES.
It’s time to support open alternatives like @GrapheneOS

@Tutanota @GrapheneOS I would love to support GrapheneOS, but it works only on flagship phones. Cheap phones (< €300)seem to be out of scope

You can buy a cheap used Pixel 8.
This will give you 2 more years to wait for new motorola smartphones to enter the market and also see what will happen with new Pixels. -

@Tutanota @GrapheneOS Perhaps it’s time to move on from the Android/iOS duopoly, isn’t it? #sailfishOS
-
@Tutanota @GrapheneOS the only problem is that as of now GrapheneOS is only compatible with Pixel phones.
From next year it will be compatible also with some select Motorola phones, not clear for now when and which ones.
Short-term solution will be moving to some other Android-ish flavor (HyperOS, ColorOS, ...).
Switching to iOS won't fix anything, as it's already where Google is going
We definitely need a 3td alternative, soon.@Tutanota @GrapheneOS
Need to persuade banks that their apps are safe to run in the non-Google sanctioned scenarios. -

@Tutanota A shame Google went through with this... Yet not surprising coming from them. The openness of Android served them in the early days of Android to attract people, against big bad "Apple's locked down Iphone". Now it's in their way.
I used to recommend Fdroid to friends and family. Happy #murena_eos user myself (never had a graphene compatible device to try it), but I can't imagine recommending flashing a ROM to just anyone, not everyone is ready to take that big a step. -
@Tutanota @GrapheneOS The very same term "side loading" makes me mad, it's just loading what you want on an OS you've paid for
@retrocomputing @Tutanota @GrapheneOS
Yeah, it used to be called, "installing a software"...

@markku @retrocomputing @Tutanota @GrapheneOS also "third party apps". "SD card usage restricted to third party apps". No, evilgoogle, it's not a third party app, it's my file browser in my own SD card where evilandroid made bloatware folders.

@madduci@mastodon.social
Two years ago, I got myself a used Pixel 7A for around 160€.
Still works perfectly fine with GrapheneOS.@Tutanota @GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social

@Tutanota @GrapheneOS would be nice if you pushed actually cool well supported distributions like @LineageOS instead

AOSP is just AP.
If one must ask Google to send them the source code then there's nothing open-source about it. -

@madduci @Tutanota @GrapheneOS I've bought Pixel 8a last year for around 300e and it works great. I think they will support 8a until 2030, you can check on their website until when they plan to support certain devices.

We definitely need a 3td alternative, soon.Well, we do have some "3rd alternatives" such as Ubuntu Touch (shipped with Volla Phones) or Sailfish OS (shipped with Jolla Phone)

@Goodlucksil @Tutanota @GrapheneOS My understanding is that GrapheneOS' compatibility limits are set by the hardware, or lack thereof, not by some policies or intent.
Can you name a phone OS alternative that can be used right now for your everyday phone?@retrocomputing @Goodlucksil @Tutanota @GrapheneOS
Along with around 100,000 others, I use the deGoogled Android /e/OS. Sent from my new Murena Gigaset GS6.

@The_Universality Indeed, still a very short list of compatible phones unfortunately.
To make a difference we need broad compatibility, enabling phones with low price tags,.
Android and iOS set the bar quite high, people expect lots of features to just considering changing something that "just works" for them, not to mention the price point.
Also most people aren't technically savvy, so don't understand - hell, even care about - the privacy implications of their choices.
But I'm digressing.. -
