This may sound a little complicated, but it isn’t really. I set it up following the provider’s howtos. That was ca. 15 years ago, and it’s just been ticking along.
If that provider ever goes bad, I can just take my stuff elsewhere. The service itself is basically a commodity.

so... I started using Proton just to move storage to the EU.
in that sense, for email, it's behind my own domain and could just be migrated (i.e. what you said doesn't sound complicated at all, other than DMARC issues).
but the other thing I use them for is photos, end2end encrypted, that then don't have to be also stored on my phone. migrating that would be more challenging. I looked for alternatives for a couple years, before establishing a Proton account.

I have already paid ahead for a year so, even if I swap today my money is already in their hands for services I paid up front for. I would prefer to pressure them by threatening I can take my money with me on my next payment date, rather than silently leaving without explaining why.

Haven’t encountered any evil yet. Only hiccups were that some things weren’t properly localized, like one confirmation link mail was in German, that was pretty self explanatory tho

migrating to tuta.com from proton was rather painless, even with custom domains. took a couple of hours including reading some light documentation. On the Tuta side, most of it guides you through everything you need to do so no real reason to even read the docs it turned out.

What I picked up regarding porkbun from comments and Wikipedia is it moved from Florida (fascist state gov) to Oregon (complicated). Its company had originally held the .gay domain but released it to the public. (.gay was later picked up again by a registrar through legal mechanisms I know nothing about.)

I moved all my email to Migadu.com, who provide straightforward email management, full control of spam filtering and so forth, and no bullshit. Company is in Switzerland with servers in France.I use Porkbun for my domain registration because they, too, seemed quite straightforward and reasonably priced. Haven't heard anything bad about them yet (I mean, leaving Florida is always a plus, if you ask me).
I played with Proton for a bit as a possible password manager, but it just isn't as good as 1Password (nothing is, sadly), so I ditched it.

@alice @slothrop Yeah, unfortunately they had some bullshit around vocally supporting Trump and the christofascist GOP early last year. They got butthurt for getting called out on it and decided to "refocus [their] social media efforts" which meant slumbering their fediverse account.
I canceled my Proton Founder's subscription and moved over to @fastmail specifically because they supported more private domains. I've been very happy with the service.
The other recommendation I always see floating around is @Tutanota but they only documented 10 private domains when I was looking
