@jwcph Happy that his pitch (which probably was about "Romulans and the Federation shooting at each other") was rejected. He obviously doesn't know what Star Trek was and is about so he would be very bad at creating a new one.
He can do scientific scifi with low social interaction (Martian, Hail Mary). He was, er, _not so good_ when trying to portray humans and their interaction (Artemis, weak in every regard).
He has his niche where he performs. He should stick to it.

The world you build, the characters you have, their choices. It all says something about how you think the world should or shouldn't be

@jwcph Wow, that guy is an ID10T. Star Trek has always been about social commentary, and if you think otherwise, you are an absolute dumbass.
I mean come on, TOS had an episode where people had half white, half black skin, and they were racist against other people with half black, half white skin. They aired the first interracial kiss on television. Trek has never been subtle about its social commentary.
The worst Trek episodes have always been the ones where the underlying commentary was either non-existent, or buried and hard to spot. The clip show where RIker has non-stop nightmares, and the one where Crusher fucks a space ghost for example.
If you think Trek was ever just about Romulans and Feds shooting at each other, you are a simple minded moron.
Project Hail Mary, a book I now definitely will not be reading. Thanks for the heads up!

He says he just wants to “watch Romulans and the Federation shoot at each other”, but civilisations don’t just shoot at each other for no reason. There’s always some kind of social driver for why they don’t get along and it’s delusional to think otherwise.

@seedsignal @blaubeer A lot of what you say echoes the way I felt about this movie from the beginning - I was never that interested so I never thought particularly hard about it, but the "sole white savior dude" stank was all over it from the word go (especially since the marketing apparently downplayed Rocky the alien) & few things put me off faster...

@jwcph @roytoo @rainerzufall_le Not relevant, but he’s also a terrible writer. I made it about halfway through The Martian and its protagonist’s insistence that everyone finds him funny despite no supporting evidence.
He said something about some scientific term and then decided to rename it pirate ninjas (funny, see?). I thought, “jfc I’m gonna see fifty occurrences of the phrase “pirate ninjas” on the next page, aren’t I?
I glanced at the next page, then shut the book forever more.
