Yes, this will give ACM more papers. No, the ideology of "number go up" productivism is not the path to responsible, ecological or ethical computing, but to irrelevance. #AIslop

Meanwhile @chi is on track to be slopified with some 30.000 submissions by 2030, and ... the only option that does not seem to be considered is to act against that?

Nevermind that the systems used, which now will no longer need to be declared, are by design in conflict with international human rights law. https://hci.social/@cbecker/116727380470829998

Just last year, the same ACM's late CEO Vicki L. Hanson selected and invited some of us to discuss what computing's responsibility for climate change is and develop guidance for @ACM policy. In the resulting report, we said that "computing’s purpose within a strategy for tackling climate change must be reimagined." (See the report for more.)

Is ACM going to be part of this reimagination? 🤷‍♂️

What I do know is that these conversations to reimagine computing for ecological and just futures ARE taking place and that people have inspiring ideas, wonderful collaborations and fabulous results to share, including - among others - at #LIMITS2026 in two weeks, proudly independent of ACM and free to attend, everywhere at once 🙂

oh but we can't possibly be expected to keep track of what we do with our computers when we produce ten papers each week!

Damn...now thinking of changing instances. The amount of "AI“ posts I've seen definitely went up over h years, but to give level footing with actual authors? I disaree.

How would expecting authors to disclose use of LLMs in their work "limit" their use of AI?

Don't worry. Soon most employeers will mandate the use of "a one", as the US education secretary calls it.

@cbecker @ACM The much maligned SciGen project was ahead of its time.

oh but we can't possibly be expected to keep track of what we do with our computers when we produce ten papers each week!

@cbecker @nyhan Whoever wrote that policy has perhaps never written a paper. Writing is an integral part of doing research.

How about developing dedicated tools for uncritical writing-related tasks such as spell checking? And not call them AI? They would then *automatically* be outside of the scope of AI policies. A simple and smart move! We should have thought of this long ago.

ACM will no longer require disclosure of the use of #generativeAI in writing papers.... an absolutely terrible change by the @ACM Publications Board to the Policy on Authorship.

Yes, this will give ACM more papers. No, the ideology of "number go up" productivism is not the path to responsible, ecological or ethical computing, but to irrelevance. #AIslop

@cbecker as the result of such a policy, i wonder how many regular reviewers for acm journals/conferences will refuse to do this task. it will be at least one (counting myself).
