So... here's the thing:
DON'T PLAN YOUR REVOLUTION ON THE KING'S BLACKBOARD.
The fact that organisers are depending on the availability of a platform run by any of the tech bros... well, it makes me think you aren't a terribly effective opposition.
@Remittancegirl "RSVP for the protest" set off my alarms from the beginning. Never have, never will.

@kelleynnn I'm not in the US. I'm not American.

@Remittancegirl Written before the Saturday rallies
No Kings. No Demands. What Happened?

@Remittancegirl The No Kings movement uses many other communications platforms too, (it’s not either/or) so I wouldn’t say that the organizers are depending on it. If you back their cause, your encouragement would be more effective than your criticism.

@mikesax I do back their cause. But their cause is not my cause. I am not American.
And if you have looked at the totality of my timeline, you would know that.
But when criticism is due, it's due. And better now than when all the accounts on all their tech-bro owned plaforms disappear at once, perhaps my criticism will have prompted them to diversify.

@Remittancegirl Jeepers. Are there no limits to these people's naivety?

@tomjennings This technology is here to stay, it isn't going away.
It is what we do with it and what we demand of it and how we shape it (where we can) that matters. But we can and should mitigate the perils as much as we can.
And yes, you are right: the internet is not a safe space. But then where is a safe space?
I agree wholeheartedly that meeting in the flesh is good - not just to lessen dependence on digital communication - but because what is experienced in the body more powerful.
I apologize for the rant. In my heat about it i was reacting to this common groundless myth of the internet as the modern thing better than what came

@tomjennings Hey, Tom, no need to apologise at all. But I also want to warn against the trap of nostalgia. It simply is so unproductive.
Love it or hate it, the internet has changed us profoundly - socially and individually. It isn't going away. The challenge is, to find a way to keep the things we cared about before it came, and to mitigate the obvious damage it can do.
We can never go home. But we can have some say in the new place we find ourself in.

Right. There's no back to go to, though I didn't have that in mind. All i meant is it means not swallowing the ideologies and myths about the Internet as freedom. The 1995 promises (implications, really) run deep. Phone lines were bad enough; but they were at least regulated, fwiw. Those don't even exist any more.
We have Internet tools that work, but none of them are "convenient" in the way meta google apple's are. Almost no one I know irl wil change their the daily habits. Its maddening and frustrating.
Maybe metas recent act will have some effect.

@tomjennings I'm going to say something that sounds harsh, and I don't enjoy saying it.
The people who won't change their habits simply aren't in enough pain yet.
But also, I think, we've been brainwashed into believing that democracy is easy - that it should be easy.
And for a while, for many, it really was. But no more.

@Remittancegirl Oh, that's wonderful opsec.
-
@Remittancegirl If you’re trying to get the people involved, you have to go where the people are
@the_gneech @Remittancegirl You have to reach them, but if they’re all locked in a nazi bar in which all non-nazi utterances are punished by banishment then paying entry to that nazi isn’t the way to acomplish that.
Face it, those exclusively locked into the big tech siloes are a lost cause. Until the siloes are broken.

@tasket @roblosricos
Sadly, that would just get them cancelled faster. -

This is honestly my biggest break with activist communities, and my biggest personal frustration.
I have been consistently mocked for my allegiance to OSS platforms and my disdain for mainstream ones. I've been told several times how the goals of OSS are a sky-castle that can never be (nevermind that we actually *did it*).
And then something like this happens.

@emc2 It has to be both frustrating and bewildering.

@DaveRussell We all need a little more cognac. It's going to be a long few years.
-

@realcainmosni I have no idea what that means.

@Remittancegirl "Opsec": operational security. Keeping your operations safe from external interference, and your secrets secret.
Relying on your adversary for the resources you need for your operations seems a trifle - shall we say - "foolish"?
