    dopamine addicted.
    That's by design.
They've hacked our neurotransmitters. They've hacked our brains. It's a construct. It's a manipulation. People can unplug.

      @padinero Here's the thing:

If they depend on a platform owned by someone who has a specific interest in hindering their organization, then people will get confused and stay at home.

The solution is to train people into using alternative forms of communication. And the actual act of training people to on teach using mastodon, will, in itself create a community of trust.

But how can we manage to get to those young people they should reach their grandparents and ask them for the forgotten knowledge of prehistorical technology called e-mail.

Me thinks the client for this still are on the phones, just buried deep. I know, it is very demanding to learn how to use email client, but it is only about the last thing that can be silenced by the #technazi bros – as long as the mail address ends in .eu .de .pl .no or .ch

Proton even is giving special e-mail accounts for organizing:

        So... here's the thing:

DON'T PLAN YOUR REVOLUTION ON THE KING'S BLACKBOARD.

The fact that organisers are depending on the availability of a platform run by any of the tech bros... well, it makes me think you aren't a terribly effective opposition.

@Remittancegirl The infuriatingly frustrating thing to me is that people don't understand the nature of timing.

All these morons going to BlueSky and similar don't "get" that the trap is to make it feel functional enough ... and then they shut the jaws of the trap just before elections to maximize the impact and leave the victims with too little time to recover.

FWIW, No Kings/Indivisible are also here on Mastodon. So they're doing better than most. But their followers elsewhere? No excuse.

@Remittancegirl On efficacy, I'm not quite sure what they have achieved other than being a social club for people who were going to vote a particular way anyway.

@simonbp @Remittancegirl Having participated in numerous No Kings protests, they do lots of organizing at the protests for additional and more direct actions. Voter registration, canvassing, call campaigns, stuff like that.

I haven't noticed any direct fundraising, but I figure they don't want to deal with the legal hoops revolving around that.

National Indivisible is here. Local Indivisible's are pretty rare here. My local had not heard of mastodon. I suggested that they organize here. Not enough reach they say. I don't want to download another app they say. Don't make me learn something new they say. It's too complicated they say. Blah blah blah.

@roblosricos OK, but what about their followers who made themselves reachable only via oligarch media?

IMO, movements like #nokings should have been dropping hints to their supporters that they need to focus their attention on better platforms.

@Remittancegirl Meta/IG's action against the pro-democracy organizers is the actual biased-media suppression alleged by right-wingers. The difference is that this time it actually happened.
Sadly, but hopefully, this incident was necessary to demonstrate proof: of the danger, as well as Meta's intentions.
No Kings was organizing on IG because IG is where the people are. There is now clear evidence that it is time for the people to change that fact.
That was a tactic even Trump's people managed to figure out: when Meta booted him, he had Truth Social spun up on Mastodon's codebase

The myths that you have to be on the platform because everyone else is there and they won’t go elsewhere is bullshit.

                    Ask MySpace.

@Remittancegirl The No Kings movement uses many other communications platforms too, (it’s not either/or) so I wouldn’t say that the organizers are depending on it. If you back their cause, your encouragement would be more effective than your criticism.

And if you have looked at the totality of my timeline, you would know that.

But when criticism is due, it's due. And better now than when all the accounts on all their tech-bro owned plaforms disappear at once, perhaps my criticism will have prompted them to diversify.

@tomjennings This technology is here to stay, it isn't going away.

It is what we do with it and what we demand of it and how we shape it (where we can) that matters. But we can and should mitigate the perils as much as we can.

And yes, you are right: the internet is not a safe space. But then where is a safe space?

I agree wholeheartedly that meeting in the flesh is good - not just to lessen dependence on digital communication - but because what is experienced in the body more powerful.

I apologize for the rant. In my heat about it i was reacting to this common groundless myth of the internet as the modern thing better than what came

@tomjennings Hey, Tom, no need to apologise at all. But I also want to warn against the trap of nostalgia. It simply is so unproductive.

Love it or hate it, the internet has changed us profoundly - socially and individually. It isn't going away. The challenge is, to find a way to keep the things we cared about before it came, and to mitigate the obvious damage it can do.

We can never go home. But we can have some say in the new place we find ourself in.

Right. There's no back to go to, though I didn't have that in mind. All i meant is it means not swallowing the ideologies and myths about the Internet as freedom. The 1995 promises (implications, really) run deep. Phone lines were bad enough; but they were at least regulated, fwiw. Those don't even exist any more.

We have Internet tools that work, but none of them are "convenient" in the way meta google apple's are. Almost no one I know irl wil change their the daily habits. Its maddening and frustrating.

Maybe metas recent act will have some effect.

@tomjennings I'm going to say something that sounds harsh, and I don't enjoy saying it.

The people who won't change their habits simply aren't in enough pain yet.

But also, I think, we've been brainwashed into believing that democracy is easy - that it should be easy.

And for a while, for many, it really was. But no more.
