The journey of tech empowerment and liberation from tech bros can be a long, bumpy road.
The biggest tech regret of my adult life is that I didn't use a custom domain name as my main email address, so that when things invariably go south, I can simply hop to a new email provider.
The hundred or so email aliases I made with #Proton are a real headache right now. Time to clean up my mess.

@_elena Aye, this shocked me a big one too. I don't use their mail option a lot but I have Proton Pass. Seriously considering the move back to KeepassXC now.
-
@_elena so many aliases! I have much more less and consider, what should I do. Maybe can you share yours ideas how to resolve it?
@sebastian so I read reports by people who used a free account for a month and then did not pay that aliases ALLEGEDLY still work, even when plans expire. Still, I want to create a personal system where I do not rely on one big company for such a key feature.
I'm happy I never used ProtonDrive and ProtonPass, that's for sure.

@paulk totally understand, ESPECIALLY for something as sensitive as passwords. They've lost my trust... the only way forward for them is to fire Andy Yen AND their AI-pilled CTO. This is catastrophic for their image and reputation, I don't see any other way to recover
-
@_elena i should add that I managed to convince my wife and son to do the same. Best decision ever.
@andycarolan amazing! I grabbed a domain name for my child a month after she was born and I will definitely encourage her to use it - when she's old enough

@_elena may I ask what provider(s) you’re considering next? I also need to get off Proton.

@_elena I’m in the exact same situation and I’m kicking myself because when I decided to de-google and move to Proton I was aware of custom domains but it seemed like to much to learn at the time. Now I have a million alias through SimpleLogin (a service I’ll really miss) and I’m not sure how to handle that
-
@_elena I find it ironic proton fight big tech by using big tech (ie claude). Any alternatives? I was hoping for proton to be a more viable alternative to gsuite
Edit: typo
@closeted_unionist
I'm kind of between proton and tuta right now. Tuta is useable, but you need to pay a couple Euros month for anything about the very basics (like search!) google etc has really conditioned us (me) to expect things for free, backed by surveillance.I actually started to move because there's an annoying bug they don't care to fix, ironically.
And I can 95% recommend addy.io if you're lazy to run your own domain stuff.
-
@_elena I'm still cleaning up all my proton stuff and I fear the transfer a bit, but in the coming months I'll move over to dutch provider @soverin keeping my own domain(s), but only after total clean-up of all aliases and gmail-remnants.
I never realised I had to many accounts and subscriptions: I'm on a digital cleanse it seems

@_elena I’m in a similar scenario. Just weighing alternatives. Any thoughts?

@_elena Next one, unfortunately. Liked the idea that Proton transported years ago but although I like Mail and VPN there, I am glad to use my own domains AND a service like @mailbox_org here in Germany. The numbers of trustful services seem to decrease week by week at the moment, that’s a sad fact.

@_elena Too bad as they were off to a good start. They now seem to be set for a 'good end'.
Really glad I once did the exercise to move once before, to test KeepassXC.Indeed, a clean slate would be best for them, but the damage is done. That goes fast and reaches far.

@ngel I'm waiting to see how Proton reacts to this catastrophic, reputation-destroying story. If Yen and the AI-pilled CTO step down, I may consider sticking around. My unlimited plan renews in May.
For the time being I am changing my "from" email address and using a custom domain name to make the transition easier... I'm also looking at Tuta (where I already have an account)
-
@ngel I like that they're NL-based, combined with the fact that @bitsoffreedom use their services

@_elena@mastodon.social @ngel@ruby.social In case you're not aware, Tuta is flirting with using AI too and already has a bit: https://mastodon.social/@Tutanota/117518311002072172

@_elena Well, he was already controversial, but had mostly been given the benefit of the doubt. But that's it for Proton. A shame.

@hrafnagud @_elena @mailbox_org I liked Ellana's self hosting point. I just wish there was a self hosting fund I could give my proton money too and they would ensure the communities of the services I used where supported. The number of separate self hosted solutions to replace a web stack like proton is large depending on the services you use of course. Does anyone have a table listing solid recommendations? Digital detox seems to be the next move. I would be interested in helping with a guide if anyone else is.

@closeted_unionist huh I do not use Claude. I picked ProtonMail 6 years ago because of its reputation for security and privacy and moved there from Google. I did not expect the company to take such a turn (in 2020 LLMs were not a thing)
@_elena @closeted_unionist You don’t, but Proton does, extensively, that’s what the comment was about.
