@alienghic i am mostly trying to convey a 'what are you even going to do with this information' and 'the usa would nuke the netherlands before admitting defeat, but making sure a/i dies of financial pressure is much easier'

@navi I wanted to fix this but I don't think there was, or still is, much interest. It would be a lot of work to do something different, at this stage.

@cwebber @navi I've seen the GNUNet style relative naming scheme and the "assign phonemes to blocks of bits" approach of the fashy "planets" project. If you don't mind my asking, what sort of scheme would you suggest? Does Spritely have something built in?

        @alice

trying to create work arounds makes it harder for them to impose sanctions, which at the very least slows down their ability oppress someone else.

All the local defense groups chasing ICE around didn't fully stop ICE but it did slow them down and at kept at least some people out of the concentration camps.

@cwebber that is pretty crazy. any website a government doesn't like can just be removed from the Internet now apparently, simply by labeling it as terrorist propaganda

@alienghic i am.. skeptical that a bunch of dorks sharing a host file is comparable to protecting someone from a fascist.
idk propose to register the domain name as a proxy, start your own antifascist collective and share the legal burden of this kind of work, etc. its just a bit frustrating when the 'tech crowds' focus on their ability to access a website and then lose interest.

@cwebber The countries of the world need to fundamentally understand that this will not change as long as Trump lives and the people who surround him are in power and not in prison. The world should treat its entanglements with the US with wartime urgency. The US must be made the dispensable nation. The sovereignty of every nation on the planet that does not understand this is at stake.

@Infoseepage @cwebber Politicians are not completely stupid. They know this, but appeasing Trump is often seen as the lesser evil, and this is not new with respect to relations with the US.

Sticking Trump in prison is a matter for the voters in the USA, much though I like the idea. Like it or not he got voted in again, so look to fellow countrymen to address the issue.

Autistici/Inventati's domains have now been revoked. I updated the link in the above post with a wayback machine copy.

Every now and then someone tells me, "We have a decentralized naming system, it's called DNS!" and I say, no we don't, DNS is extremely centralized? And if that wasn't clear to you before, hopefully it's clear to you today.

The US has declared Autistici/Inventati, an Italian anarchist hacker (in the classic sense of the term) collective, a terrorist organization. https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/sb0616/

But what you really ought to read is this article about A/I's history, and what this means https://web.archive.org/web/20260828071449/https://cavallette.noblogs.org/2026/08/10083/2

I'm concerned that the US government is starting to identify decentralized media infrastructure as a threat to its survival. Repost information about this broadly, and if you have media contacts, inform them of counter-narratives; there could come a time where the fediverse, or any decentralized network infrastructure, is a target as well if we don't sound the alarms now.

EDIT: I linked to the wrong page! The second link is now fixed 🙂

EDIT 2: A/I's domains have been revoked! So added an archive.org link

                  @cwebber
I'm trying to wrap my head around the technical process in the background. Sorry if that's a stupid question: That revocation… was it possible or easier because of .org being a US-based company? Is revoking a US-based domain name easier than others from somewhere else?

@cararemixed @cwebber That's not mitigating the centralised nature of how DNS works today, just changing the centre of authority. We need to go full fedi/p2p for name-to-address resolution, and probably (almost certainly) all the other things DNS gets (mis)used for.

@mikro2nd @cwebber Honestly I'm so bored with "the lets decentralize all the things" line of arguments. Go ahead, do it! Meanwhile, having alternative authorities isn't going to solve everyone's problems but it sure introduces fewer problems. My position is that only one option is the worst of all options. Having choices changes the dynamics.

@cwebber@social.coop (⚡) though, now I wonder if there are any truely decentralized alternatives? I initially thought IP addresses were safe enough, but the underlying mechanics (fixed-length + assigned MAC addresses) make that not as decentralized as I thought.

@cararemixed "alternative DNS systems" doesn't really help though, because the TLS CA system is designed to work with the centralized view of "DNS truth"

@cwebber @cararemixed this is one of the reasons I never want to enable HSTS on my website

the plan for it is to be a site about myself, meltcats (my species), all my tech projects (like Kittyscript), my political views and an Akkoma instance.

but all that the website is right now is two glorified hello world pages I wrote myself and a few redirects to them.

yay for ADHD executive dysfunction. I'm paying €23 every month for a server I completely underutilize because I can't make myself follow plans.

Being able to talk to people outside of government propaganda is a step toward being able to resist an oppressive government.

Look at how much effort Putin puts into restricting what social media russians can access and all the limitations placed on gathering.

                                  It's not enough, but it's a start.

And yes we should be doing more communication over tor, i2p, or maybe even paper.

@cwebber Not all of them - https://www.inventati.org is still up, but https://www.autistici.org is gone

the vast majority of the web is still not AI shit and while Nazis have always been allowed on the web, it has only been very recently that AI is a problem.

you're gonna argue that our conservative relatives should never have been allowed to use the same internet we do? that pushing them to instead use a web shared by fascists where our voices were not present would have been better for society?

the fedi doesn't just moderate harassment. it limits all speech that isn't progressive.

@wjmaggos I would like to introduce you to a bunch of instances I blocked, if you want to know how well "the web" moderates non-progressive views.

But you have a bone to pick, and from the tone, it's not with me.

                                      So chill for a week.

@cwebber Noblogs.org blogs gives a timeout right now but the subdomain cavalette (which looks like a sort of status page and way to communicate with all their very many users) is still up.

                                          https://cavallette.noblogs.org/

                                          And https://www.inventati.org/ is also up.

Please edit your post. By pointing people to archive.org (who removed posts related to the Amnesty UK report story) you're not giving people the option to check out other links and older or newer posts on https://cavallette.noblogs.org/

                                          Thanks in advance
