Spotify, already the bane of many podcasters’ existence, has decided to amp things up: Now it’s scouring podcasts to see if any infringe on “literary content.”

Just to follow up on this with some stats:
The podcast episode in question is 62 minutes long. More than an hour discussing a book.
Six minutes in, they quote the opening paragraph of the book, a total of 71 words. It takes 20 seconds.
What are we even doing here?
@jsnell *stares in LLM training* Those words on a podcast are the problem, all right.

Also I guess I need to clear this up - I am hosting the files for someone else's show on my network. It's not my podcast, but it's on my network so I get the legal notices.
@jsnell I fear it will only get worse as fewer and fewer disconnected rich people buy corporations and install rules that do nothing but protect their profits. And by “protect” I fully mean insane fantasy delusional actions.

@jsnell If only the podcasts used the books for "AI" training, that would be totally fine!

Spotify, already the bane of many podcasters’ existence, has decided to amp things up: Now it’s scouring podcasts to see if any infringe on “literary content.” It’s already flagged one podcast I host, which reviews/critiques an author’s books one by one, for “infringing” on the book. This is dire.
@jsnell ...As they use their users' content to train their own AI systems

@jsnell I barely remember why I hate Spotify anymore but “they made podcasts stop being podcasts” was DEFINITELY the original sin now that you’ve reminded me. Fuck these scum.

@jsnell Awesome. Only AI can get unfettered access to information now.

@jsnell My guess is that Spotify is working on more "make a podcast from this" generative AI features and they are rolling out a Content ID equivalent system to make sure users aren't making whole books into episodes... except they're doing it very stupidly.
