@stefan What I'm hearing is that they'll be left with $100 billion.

"Thirty-three states have banded together to sue Meta, alleging that the company was exploiting its young users on Instagram and Facebook for profit, including by collecting data from children without parental consent."

The damages could be as high as $1.4 trillion, nearly the same as Meta's market capitalization at just above $1.5 trillion.

@stefan Amazing it took this long to recognize that given that they've been doing it since like 2013 or so... I guess better more than a decade late than never.

@stefan Oh my gosh, South Carolina is actually in the list of states with Attorneys General who are suing Meta.
South Carolina rarely sues for the citizens. Only for the wealthy.

@stefan I wish the company could be sued out of existence and Zuckerberg banned from ever owning any form of social media or communications. He and his funder, Peter Thiel, should not exist in society.

The case really heavily emphasizes YOUNG Facebook users. I'm worried that that means they'll have to meet a higher bar to prove Facebook was _specifically targeting_ young users. It so clearly causes harm to users of ALL ages it seems like that would've been easier to go after.

Anyway, I am not a lawyer, so what do I know? I hope they crush them into the fucking Earth.

@stefan @bosconet In this case can used progressive Russian know-how: declare a "foreign agent", forbid all activities on a US territory and her jurisdiction. And invite to the exit from the territory of the United States, with all offices and employees.

@stefan it'll settle out of court for $100 million in "fines" and that'll be that.

Obviously not going to get my hopes up that we could see Meta completely wiped, but it will definitely be interesting to follow this case along.

@stefan This is precisely why I left Meta - their attitude toward teen and child privacy is not just bad, it should be considered criminal.

                                          2) There's not a chance in hell they'll have to pay $1.4 trillion.
