One of the top threads on the ClaudeAI subreddit right now: "I am done with this shit" https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1wm5c21/i_am_done_with_this_shit/

Curious to see just how much of the thread on a quite pro-genAI subreddit is people commiserating on the exhaustion of their work turning primarily into tedium and poor engineering.

Bonus in that the Claude AI summary bot in the thread says:

    > The Rise of the Meat Proxy: You're not an engineer anymore, you're an "organic vessel designed to press enter." Or, as one user so poetically put it, you're just a condom between Claude and your production server getting fucked. Your only real job is to be the warm body they can blame when the AI slop inevitably breaks.

@cwebber as an outsider, from what I can tell having looked into it (well, not the reddit you just linked) initially the only way companies knew how to make putatively good chatbots was the extremely consumptive general pre-trained dense, large-model perceptrons of a single hidden layer.

All these people optimistically jumped onto their bobsleds, not wanting to miss out.

However once moved behind closed doors, the new multilayer perceptron ("moe") gpts benchmark while increasingly sucking.

@cwebber Someone in that thread mentioned something called "AI 2027" and I found this: https://ai-2027.com/

Obvious divergence w/ reality... all the fundamental weaknesses of the technology are fantasized away as it takes over the world.

God this feels like NFTs again. They include "criticism" like "people hate AI because it'll take their jobs." No, people think you look dumb. Like a celeb posting "All my apes gone" on social media. It's at least partially irony-poisoned pity.

@cwebber I really maintain LLMs are like the microwave. There are some narrow specific uses where it's good, but holy shit we're still in the "True Believers trying to make Thanksgiving dinner with them" phase.

@emma @cwebber I also have to trust a deterministic screen reader that says all kinds of wrong or unintelligible stuff every day because abled people won't care about accessibility, and I still have to get stuff done. I have to trust sighted people when they say turn left that they didn't actually mean turn right. Do you just simply trust all that you see and hear? Why do you think I also wouldn't?

For LLM output specifically, I can ask another model, or I can simply enjoy the output of whatever cat picture I have it describe, or whatever meme, or even a continuous description of the view out of a bus window.

i heard an interview about people using AI to reconstruct their voices lost to cancer/ injury/ etc with AI

          https://www.npr.org/2025/07/22/nx-s1-5449081/people-who-have-lost-their-voices-are-using-ai-technology-to-regain-them

i also think things like protein folding/ cosmology/ etc can benefit from AI

there are valid uses for AI

there are also *invalid* uses for AI

and we have a right to voice that, without confusing the topic with valid uses for AI

@jrdepriest @cwebber I did a search in my history intending to find the article I stole the microwave idea from, but apparently it was a video. Anyway, yeah, it's a popular idea because it's so darn *apt*. We used to have one of those cookbooks floating around unused until it vanished, so it really hit home.

@cwebber Similarly, I think a lot of nontechnical people went into business (bought a restaurant) after appraising that closed-source chatbot bobsleds could handle numbers decisions for them, and a large number of those naieve customers futures have been ruined by the closed, proprietary nominally profiteering replacement chatbots they later got stuck with, presented as though it was the one they partnered with while being told the new chatbot "is even better".

                      @pinhman

AI is not profitable. The companies lose money each time their product is used.

The only people making money on this is the financial services sector trading stock & issuing huge loans on "possible, perhaps, maybe" future revenue AND the fossil fuel industry powering gas generators for data centers.

The product is loathed and user acceptance doesn't match the hype.

What sane business makes itself dependent on a supplier or vendor at high risk of going bankrupt?

@benroyce @pixelate @emma @cwebber i’m not going to be surprised if once the bubble pops all of the useful tools that they tried bundling into one package and call it “AI“, becomes their own individual tools.

@Dangerous_beans @thegrumpyenby @cwebber My screen reader read it, thank you.

                                    > Whereas the concept of a special regime for certain groups has been developed during the last few years by the UN the human rights and fundamental freedoms of marginalized and vulnerable people remain vastly underserved. Persons with disabilities are often affected by this lack of protection, as many of them suffer double or multiple discrimination, due to their disability, their age and social status, for instance.

                                      Devin:

nobody has a problem with the disabled community using AI

i celebrate those uses. we celebrate those uses

our complaints are about all the uses of AI that harm society

you know that. you understand that difference

so there is no need to fake a conflict that does not exist

@benroyce @emma @ahltorp @cwebber Did you read the part where I simply commented on how I use AI, and some one came at me for it?

what i saw was you defending your use of AI, and not indicating that you do that because you are disabled

after their remark, *then* you indicated that

                                        that's miscommunication, not malice
